Abstract

This paper explores how French grammar in the second half of the 19th century classifies prepositional phrases, in particular verbal complements. This study analyses the definitions given to prepositions, indirect complements and circumstantial ones. Approaches found in publications are semantic, logical, notional, grammatical and substitutional. The paper shows that the opposition between both complements is designed during this period on asymmetrical grounds.
