Abstract

This chapter analyzes metaphor use in specialist discourse by comparing angerand love metaphor use in experts in the domain of psychology in two differentgenres, online counseling and academic lectures. The study is based on twosmall-scale corpora that comprise written and spoken language and were compiledfor an exploratory investigation. The analysis of linguistic and conceptualmetaphors in the discourse contexts in which the metaphors are used bringsout interesting differences in the experts’ metaphor use for love and angerbetween the two genres. I argue that these differences are probably due to thedistinctive groups of participants as well as the different discourse structuresand goals in the psychology genres, online counseling and academic lecturing.
