An extensive sociolinguistic study in 1978 demonstrated a levelling of thehigh- and low-status varieties of the Bergen dialect, and the two centres of Fanaand Bergen within this municipality showed the same linguistic tendencies. Aparallel study of recordings from 2010 reveals that the sociolinguistic variationwithin each of the centres have continued decreasing, but the dialect in each ofthe two centres develops in different directions in essential features. This dialectsplit seems to be an effect of a corresponding long-lasting difference in socialwelfare between these two parts of the municipality. Various language attitudeshave been studied without disclosing any obvious explanatory differences.
