This paper presents a bibliometric analysis comparing the research on L2vocabulary acquisition published in 1982 and 2006. A set of co-citation mapsshows that there are some significant changes in the field over this period. Themost important of these changes is a growing consensus in vocabulary research, mainly focussed on the work of Paul Nation, whose seminal book Teaching andLearning Vocabulary appeared in 1990. The data also suggest that the influenceof cognitive psychologists – important in the 1982 data has become muchweaker in the 2006 research. The paper argues that co-citation analysis providesa useful tool for exploring important trends in the intellectual history ofvocabulary research.
