Life before Nation
This paper presents a bibliometric analysis comparing the research on L2vocabulary acquisition published in 1982 and 2006. A set of co-citation mapsshows that there are some significant changes in the field over this period. Themost important of these changes is a growing consensus in vocabulary research,mainly focussed on the work of Paul Nation, whose seminal book Teaching andLearning Vocabulary appeared in 1990. The data also suggest that the influenceof cognitive psychologists – important in the 1982 data has become muchweaker in the 2006 research. The paper argues that co-citation analysis providesa useful tool for exploring important trends in the intellectual history ofvocabulary research.
