Financial jargon in a general newspaper corpus
The present paper presents an investigation of financial jargon evident in Norwegian newspapers that can be related to the recent financial crisis. The study is a first step in exploring whether newspapers are useful sources from which to extract Norwegian terminology to be included in for instance termbases. In addition, it will provide a basis for considering whether there may be a need for a planned development of financial terminology in Norway. The paper reports on how financial jargon is used in Norwegian newspapers in relation to the concepts of <i>financial crisis, credit crunch, subprime </i>and <i>hedge fund</i>. In particular, the analysis focuses on whether Norwegian terminology is formed or English terms are maintained to describe these concepts.
