Abstract

Complementary to the comparative method is a method known as internal reconstruction, which involves the reconstruction of earlier stages in a language on the sole evidence of synchronic alternation between morphemes in different environments. These internal reconstructions are usually, though not always (as we shall see below), phonological in nature.
