A Grammar of Luwo

- This book is a description of Luwo, a Western Nilotic language of South Sudan. Luwo is used by multilingual, dynamic communities of practice as one language among others that form individual and flexible repertoires. It is a language that serves as a means of expressing the Self, as a medium of art and self-actualization, and sometimes as a medium of writing. It is spoken in the home and in public spaces, by fairly large numbers of people who identify themselves as Luwo and as members of all kinds of other groups. In order to provide insights into these dynamic and diverse realities of Luwo, this book contains both a concise description and analysis of the linguistic features and structures of Luwo, and an approach to the anthropological linguistics of this language. The latter is presented in the form of separate chapters on possession, number, experiencer constructions, spatial orientation, perception and cognition. In all sections of this study, sociolinguistic information is provided wherever this is useful and possible, detailed information on the semantics of grammatical features and constructions is given, and discussions of theory-oriented approaches to various linguistic features of Luwo are presented.

- Es war kein Zufall, daß das achte Fachkolloquium der Indogermanischen Gesellschaft (1981) in Freiburg im Breisgau stattfand, – es war, wie dieser Band, dem Kollegen, Freund und Lehrer Oswald Szemerényi gewidmet, der das letzte Jahr seiner Amtszeit als Hochschullehrer angetreten hatte. Eher zufälliger Art war die Wahl des Themas: es sollte ein Bereich sein, der Szemerényi's Arbeitsgebieten nahestand und ihn besonders interessierte, – da hatte nun nahezu jedes Teilgebiet der Indogermanistik eine Chance gewählt zu werden, und wir entschieden uns schließlich für das Germanische: hier waren nicht nur profilierte Forscher zu gewinnen, es war auch lange nicht mehr Gegenstand eines indogermanistischen Gesprächs gewesen, obwohl doch jeder Vertreter unseres Fachs zumindest in seiner Lehrtätigkeit ständig mit den Zusammenhängen zwischen Germanisch und Indogermanisch zu tun hat. Das Ergebnis hat uns recht gegeben: die Fülle von im vollen Sinne indogermanistischen Fragestellungen, die sich aus der Arbeit an der historisch-vergleichenden Beschreibung germanischer Sprachen ergibt, hat die Fachleute und die Gäste unter den Teilnehmern beeindruckt, und eine lebhafte und substanzreiche Diskussion hat den Vortragenden an Ort und Stelle das Interesse bewiesen, das ihren Forschungen entgegengebracht wird.

- Der vorliegende Sammelband widmet sich einem Thema der Sprachphilosophie: den Grenzen der Sprache. Die Begrenztheit des Sprechens, das Versagen der Sprache und das Schweigen sind Bereiche, denen das Interesse dieses Buches gilt. Groß e Bedeutung gewinnt deshalb die Frage, in welchem Sinne und ob überhaupt von einem Jenseits der Sprache gesprochen werden kann. Dabei steht das Verhältnis von Immanenz und Transzendenz im Mittelpunkt. Das Unnennbare, Unaussagbare, das Unheimliche, das hinter dem Rücken des Sprechenden lauert, ist der Sprache selbst transzendent. Trotzdem gelingt es, das Transzendente sprachlich einzuholen. Es ist der Sprache immanent: ein immanentes Transzendentes. Darin scheint sich eine Potenz der Sprache anzudeuten, selbst darüber zu sprechen, worüber man nicht sprechen und gleichwohl nicht schweigen kann.<br />Kaum ein Thema der Sprachphilosophie eignet sich daher mehr für einen interdisziplinären Band als gerade dieses. Es ist nicht nur Gegenstand der Philosophie, sondern verweist auf und korrespondiert mit wichtigen Forschungsrichtungen aus der Wissenschaftstheorie, der Theologie, der Sprachwissenschaften, der Germanistik, der Ästhetik, der Musikwissenschaften, der Wirtschaftswissenschaften, der Soziologie und Ethnologie und schließlich auch der Medizin. Der vorliegende Sammelband versucht, den unterschiedlichen Aspekten dieses Themas sowohl in historischer als auch in systematischer Hinsicht gerecht zu werden.

- <i>Gaze in Human-Robot Communication</i> is a volume collecting recent research studying gaze behaviour in human-robot interaction (HRI). The selected articles draw inspiration from related research into gaze in human-human interaction in fields ranging from ethnography to neuroscience. The major themes of these articles include: the experimental investigation of human responses to robot gaze, the investigation of the impact of coordinating gaze acts with speech, and the development of hardware and software technologies for enabling robot gaze. - Francisco Suárez (1548–1617) sieht es als Problem an, dass nach dem traditionellen Modell der Kunstproduktion der Gedanke immer nur als Vorkonzeption und damit auf sehr vermittelte Weise in das Kunstwerk eingeht. Entsprechend wäre auch die Analyse von geistigen Hervorbringungen immer ein Prozess, bei dem die Gedanken als etwas hinter dem Gesagten Liegendes rekonstruiert werden müssten. Suárez verwirft dieses auf Nachahmung beruhende Modell und verwendet die Unterscheidung zwischen dem Denkakt – verstanden als "Blick des Geistes" – und dem gedachten Inhalt, um ein ganz neues Modell zu entwickeln. Für ihn ist es die Aufmerksamkeit des Malers, die den Pinsel führt und die so dafür sorgt, dass eine anfangs noch leere formale Repräsentation sich anfüllt. <br />Während die Innovation von Suárez zunächst keinen Widerhall findet, könnte sie ein Fundament sein für viel spätere Weisen, die Kunst aufzufassen, z. B. für die formalistische Schule der Kunstgeschichte oder für einen Künstler wie Paul Klee, der sagt: "Kunst gibt nicht das Sichtbare wieder, sondern macht sichtbar." <br /> Francisco Suárez (1548–1617) considers it to be problematic that, according to the traditional model of art production, thought only enters a piece of art obliquely, as preconception. Consequently, any analysis of mental creations would have to be a process whereby thoughts are reconstructed as something that lies behind that which is being said. Suárez rejects this imitation-based model and uses the distinction between act of thought – considered as "focus of the mind" – and the cognized content to develop a completely new model. For him, it is the artist's attention which guides the brush and which thus causes the initially empty representation to be filled.<br />While Suárez's innovation hardly received any immediate reaction, it can be considered as a foundation for later approaches to art, e.g. for the formalistic school of art history or for an artist like Paul Klee, who says: "Art does not reproduce what is visible, but rather produces visibility".

- This is the fourth volume of a comprehensive reference work which provides systematic descriptions of the manifestations of gender in languages of diverse areal, typological and socio-cultural affiliations. To the 30 languages already analysed in previous volumes, Vol. 4 adds another 12 languages whose gendered structures have received little or no academic attention in the past. Again, the collection includes a broad spectrum of languages: It contains languages with and without grammatical gender, a language with noun classification and a classifier language; larger national languages as well as smaller languages with minority status; and, of course, members of diverse language families, i.e. Indo-European as well as Finno-Ugrian, Iroquois, Tai-Kadai and Niger-Congo. The volume illustrates the tremendous variation found in the area of gender representation across languages. At the same time, it will provide the much-needed material required for an explicitly comparative approach to linguistic manifestations of gender.

Gender in Interaction

- In this volume, gender is seen as a communicative achievement and as a social category interacting with other social parametres such as age, status, prestige, institutional and ethnic frameworks, cultural and situative contexts. The authors come from a variety of backgrounds such as sociology of communication, anthropological linguistics, sociolinguistics, social psychology, and text linguistics. Masculinity and femininity are conceived of as varying culturally, historically and contextually. All contributions discuss empirical research of communication and the question of whether (and how) gender is a salient variable in discourse. Gender, Language and Culture

- This book analyzes the relationship between gender, age and role in Japanese television interviews. It covers a wide range of topics on Japanese communication; cultural and gender variables are interwoven in the interpretation of the findings. The study shows how participants interact through language and how they project their identities in the context of the interview. Based on a qualitative analysis, speech in mixed and same gender interactions is analysed, turntaking, terms of address and <i>aizuchi</i> (listener’s responses) are examined. The findings reveal interesting characteristics of all-female interactions, such as the influence of age that appears to be more important than gender; an observation that has repercussions in the study of gender and language differences in modern Japan. This book is an interdisciplinary study that integrates notions of politeness and theories of gender and language, and will be of interest to people researching Japanese culture and communication, gender studies and institutional language.

- The book examines women’s language as an ideological construct historically created by discourse. The aim is to demonstrate, by delineating a genealogy of Japanese women’s language, that, to deconstruct and denaturalize the relationships between gender and any language, and to account for why and how they are related as they are, we must consider history, discourse and ideology. The book analyzes multiple discourse examples spanning the premodern period of the thirteenth century to the immediate post-WWII years, mostly translated into English for the first time, locating them in political, social and academic developments and describing each historical period in a manner easily accessible for those readers not familiar with Japanese history. This volume aims to demonstrate that the centre/periphery tension allows for a theory of gender understood as a power relationship with implications for a political analysis of language structures, language uses and linguistic resistances. All of the 12 chapters included in this volume work on understudied languages such as Moldovan, Lakota, Cantonese, Bajjika, Croatian, Hebrew, Arabic, Ciluba, Cantonese, Cypriot Greek, Korean, Malaysian, Basque and Belarusian and they all explore from the margins different dimensions of social gender in grammar. The diversity of languages is reflected in the range of theoretical frameworks (linguistic anthropology, systemic functional linguistics, contrastive syntactical analysis to name a few) used by the authors in order to apprehend the fluidity of gender(-ed) language and identity, to highlight the social constraints on daily discourse and to identify discourses that resist gender norms. This book will be highly relevant for students and researchers working on the interface of gender with morpho-syntax, semantics, pragmatics and discourse analysis.
