Abstract

This work shows Berman’s theoretical evolution by analysing his «translation of the letter» and «poetic correspondence». In the period of «translation of the letter», Berman tried to go beyond a traditional conflict between letter and spirit considering the characteristics of the literary text. Later, the question of poeticity becomes predominant in his theory of translation. This development permits us to present the reconciliation between the literality and the poeticity as one of the characteristics of the modern literality.
