In the case of 'dissimilation', it may be said that it received wide currency through A. F. Pott's use of the term in volume II of his Etymologische Forschungen in 1836. However, Pott used 'dissimilation' as early as 1832 and it appears that he was the introducer of the term into linguistics. The history of the term 'assimilation' goes further back than has thus far been assumed. Franz Bopp made use of it in 1824, and Jacob Grimm used it earlier in the second edition of volume I of his Deutsche Grammatik (1822) and even two years earlier in a letter to Karl Lachmann. It would appear, however, that the original source of 'assimilation' was Rasmus Rask's Vejledning til det Islandske eller garnie Nordiske Sprog (1811), in which the term is frequently used. Grimm reviewed the book in 1812. Yet there is no indication in Rask's writings that he considered himself the coiner or first user of 'assimilation' in linguistics.RÉSUMÉLe présent article essaie de reconstruire quand et par qui 'assimilation' et 'dissimilation' ont été introduites dans un context explicitement linguistique pour la première fois et comment elles sont devenues des termes techniques en linguistique. En ce qui concerne 'dissimilation' on peut constater qu'elle a été disseminée dans le monde linguistique par le tome deux (1836) des Etymologische Forschungen de A. F. Pott. En fait Pott l'avait déjà employé en 1832, dans un compte rendu, et il paraît comme introducteur du terme dans la nomenclature linguistique. Le terme 'assimilation' est d'une plus ancienne date qu'on pensait jusqu'à présent, Franz Bopp l'employa en 1824, et Jacob Grimm l'utilisa déjà dans la deuxième édition du tome I de sa Deutsche Grammatik de 1822 et même dans une lettre de 1820 à Karl Lachmann. Mais l'origine de ce terme semble être la Vejledning til det Islandske eller garnie Nordiske Sprog (1811) de Rasmus Rask — dont Grimm avait fait compte rendu en 1812 — où on le trouve fréquemment employé. Cependant, en aucun lieu dans ses ouvrages Rask n'attribue l'introduction du terme à luimême.", }
