Onomastics in Poland: From 19th-Century Beginnings to the Present

SUMMARYThe paper deals with onomastics as a branch of linguistics, its subject matter, scope of research, methodology, and relations to other branches of linguistics, such as language history, dialectology, as well as other fields, for example, history. The second part of the paper presents particular periods of onomastic research in chronological order. A systematic development of the discipline is shown through bibliographic examples and mention of the most important scientific organizations and institutions. The essence of the qualitative development of Polish onomastics consists in undertaking ever new problems which attest to the broadening of the scope of research to include new classes of speech signs recognized as nomina propria. Also essential is undertaking theoretical issues — the place and function of proper names in the system of language. A list of research desiderata concludes the discussion.RÉSUMÉL'article traite de l'onomastique comme une branche de a linguistique, ses domaines, l'envergure de sa recherche, de sa méthodologie, et ses rapports avec d'autres branches de a linguistique, comme l'histoire du langage, la dia-lectologie, et même avec d'autres sujets, par exemple l'histoire en général. La deuxième partie présente périodes particulières de la recherche onomastique en ordre chronologique. Le développement systématique de la discipline est dé-montré à l'aide des exemples bibliographiques et la mention des organizations et des institutions scientifiques les plus importantes. Selon l'auteur, l'essence du developpement qualitatif de l'onomastique polonaise consiste en menant des problèmes toujours neufs qui attestent à l'élargissement de l'horizon de la recherche, par exemple pour inclure des classes nouveaux de signes linguis-tiques reconnues comme nomina propria. II serait également essential de con-fronter des problèmes théoriques —la place et la fonction des noms propres à l'intérieur du système langagier. Une liste des désiderata pour la recherche conclut la discussion.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGIn dem Beitrag geht es um einen speziellen Bereich der Sprachwissen-schaft, die Onomastik, ihr Forschungsobjekt, ihre Blickrichtung, ihre Methode sowie ihre Beziehung zu anderen Bereichen wie etwa Sprachgeschichte, Dia-lektolgie und Geschichte. Im zweiten Teil des Beitrages geht es um die ver-schiedenen Epochen onomastischer Forschung, welche in ihrer chronologi-schen Abfolge beschrieben werden. Die systematische Entwicklung der Diszi-plin wird an bibliographischen Beispielen, aber auch an besonders wichtigen Institutionen und Organisational, aufgezeigt. Das Wesen der qualitativen Ent-wicklung der polnischen Onomastik beruht darin, daß immer neue Probleme aufgegriffen werden, die die Erweiterung des Blickwinkels unter Beweis stel-len, so die neue Klassen sprachlicher Zeichen, welche als nomina propria identifiziert worden sind. Ebenso wichtig sind aber auch theoretische Unter-suchungen, etwa zur Stellung und Funktion von Eigennamen im Sprach-system. Den AbschluB bildet eine Auflistung von Forschungsdesiderata.STRESZCZENIETrescia artykulu jest onomastyka jako dzial jezykoznawstwa, jej przedmiot, zakres badan, metodologia badawcza oraz relacje mie dzy tym a innymi dzia-lami je zykoznawstwa, takimi jak: historia jezyka, dialektologia, a takze innymi naukami, np. historia W drugiej czesci przedstawiono periodyzacje badan onomastycznych w porzadku chronologicznym. Ukazano systematyczny roz-wój tej dyscypliny badawczej, egzemplifikujac ten rozwój przykladami biblio-graficznymi oraz przytoczeniem najwazniejszych organizacji i instytucji nau-kowych. Istotft rozwoju jakosciowego onomastyki polskiej jest podejmowanie coraz to nowych tematów badawczych, Swiadczacych o poszerzaniu zakresu badawczego o nowe klasy znaków mowy, uznawane za nomina propria oraz podejmowanie problematyki teoretycznej — miejsca i funkcji nazw wlasnych w systemie je zyka. Omówienie zakonczono postulatami badawczymi.
