Those by Spanish authors and published in Spain (mainly in the 18th century) underline the importance of the Spanish language in order to balance their assertions about the universality of the French language. However, by the end of the period analysed, notably in the work of Antonio de Capmany (1742-1813), the interest in keeping a balance betwen the two languages turns into an exalted defence of Spanish and even leads to a direct attack on French.RÉSUMÉNous avons cherché des commentaires relatifs au caractère universel de la langue française dans le corpus constitué par les grammaires de français pour Espagnols et par les dictionnaires français-espagnol publiés avant 1815.
