The Development of General Linguistics Within the History of the Language Sciences in Poland, 1868–1968

SUMMARYThis essay offers an overview of the contribution of Polish linguists to the development of general linguistics covering the period of the late 1860s - late 1960s. It analyzes, within an epistemological perspective, the heritage of academic teachers of the period who developed their own proposals to the theory of language against the scientific legacy which characterized European linguistics of the time. The division into periods of development considers not only historical-political circumstances contributing to the formation of linguistic centers, but also professional turning points in the careers of individual linguists illustrated by the nature and dates of particular publications as well as at times by changes in university appointments.RÉSUMÉL'article offre un survol de la contribution des linguistes polonais au développement de la linguistique générale pendant la période de la fin des années 60 du siècle dernier à la fin des années 60 du XXe siècle. Il analyse, d'une perspective epistémologique, l'héritage des érudits polonais de la période qui développèrent leurs propres théories du langage à rencontre du legs scientifique qui caracterisait la linguistique européenne de l'époque. La division de l'article en périodes de développement ne considère pas exclusivement les circonstances historico-politiques qui ont contribuées à la formation des centres linguistiques, mais également des changements professionnels dans les carrières de certains linguistes illustrées par la nature et les dates des publications spécifiques et, parfois, par les changements dans les positions universitaires.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGGegenstand dieser Abhandlung ist der Beitrag polnischer Linguïsten zur Entwicklun g der allgemeinen Sprachwissenschaft seit Ende der sechziger Jahre des vergangenen Jahrhunderts bis zum Ende der sechziger Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts. Das Erbe der akademischen Lehrer dieser Periode, die ihre eigenen Vorschläge zur allgemeinen Sprachtheorie entwickelten, wird gegen-über der wissenschaftlichen Überlieferung, die die Sprachwissenschaft im da-maligen Europa charakterisierte, vom Standpunkt einer epistemologischen Perspektive erörtert. Die Einteilung in verschiedene Entwicklungsperioden berücksichtigt nicht nur historisch-politische Bedingungen, die die Formie-rung von sprachwissenschaftlichen Zentren ermöglichten, sondern auch professionelle Wendepunkte, die den wissenschaftlichen Werdegang einzelner Gélehrter anhand der Daten ihrer Veröffentlichungen und zeitweise anhand von Ernennungen zu Lehrstühlen veranschaulichen.STRESZCZENIEPrzedmiotem niniejszej pracy jest wklad polskich jezykoznawców do rozwoju jezykoznawstwa ogólnego od lat 70-tych dziewietnastego wieku do lat 70-tych wieku dwudziestego. Na tle spuscizny naukowego jezykoznaw-stwa europejskiego tych czasów w perspektywie epistemologicznej, zana-lizowana zostala dziedzictwo nauczycieli akademickich przeszlosci, którzy rozwijali swoje wlasne propozycje teorii jezyka. Podzial na poszczególne okresu rozwoju uwzglednia nie tylko uwarunkowania polityczne, które przyczynily sie do powstania osrodków lingwistycznych, ale takze profesjo-nalne punkty zwrotne poszczególnych jezykoznawców, które charaktery-zowaly ich naukowe zyciorysy poprzez daty ich publikacji lub daty zajmo-wania stanowisk na uniwersytetach.
