Abstract

SUMMARYDutch—The Traditional Native Language of the Northern RhinelandThe Dutch-German linguistic border has been modified since the 19th century: (1) in East Friesland, (2) the region of Bentheim-Lingen, (3) the Lower Rhine territories of Cleves, Gueldre and Moers, and (4) between Maastricht and Aix-la-Chapelle. The article at hand only deals with the former Dutch-speaking areas of the northern Rhineland. In the course of the 19th century Prussia, a Rhenish power, too, since the acquisition of Cleves (1609), Gueldre (1713) and Moers (1702), had succeeded in gradually introducing High German into her Rhenish possessions after the end of the Napoleonic occupation. For several generations, however, Dutch and High German were used side by side in the schools, churches and by the authorities of these German border districts. Archives, personal and place-names, the regional almanacs as well as the Lower Fran-conian dialects still give convincing proof of the former linguistic situation in this area.RESUMOLa nederlanda—antaŭa gepatra lingvo de la nordaj rejnlandanojLa lingva limo inter la nederlanda kaj la germana šanğiğis depost la 19a jarcento: (1) en Orienta Frislando, (2) en la regiono Bentheim-Lingen; (3) en la teritorioj ce Malsupra Rejno: Klevo, Geldern kaj Moers, kaj (4) inter Maastricht kaj Akeno.
