This paper argues against recent claims by Sanders (1973) and Loewenberg (1975) that a theory of metaphor is not possible within existing linguistic theory and maintains that the notion of linguistic deviance is necessary not only to the definition of metaphor, but to the definition of the literary symbol as well.
