This volume explores the synergy between historical and cognitive linguistics demonstrating how the two can jointly shed light on patterns of language change. Focusing on figurative language particularly metaphor and metonymy it features a range of case studies that zoom in on the emergence and evolution of meaning across time with chapters addressing among other topics diachronic changes in the semantics of nouns (e.g. for emotions) and speech act verbs. Beyond lexical and grammatical change the volume engages with broader issues such as belief systems the conceptualization of the future intersubjectification etymology and prototype theory. The contributors employ a variety of theoretical and methodological frameworks including diachronic morphology cultural history and both exploratory and confirmatory statistics. Together these studies exemplify the potential of interdisciplinary approaches and invite further dialogue on the tools and theories suited to tracing the evolution of figurative thought and language over time.

Este volumen pretende ser una aproximación a la traducción de referentes culturales en el ámbito audiovisual y literario.<br/><br/>There are numerous idiosyncratic references and concepts in every language. These social linguistic gestural material and even ideological specificities are subject to continuous rewriting and interpretations through time which often do not have exact or functional equivalents in other languages and cultures. These specificities pose inevitable difficulties to understand these languages and cultures from other horizons and of course to translate them.<br/>The importance of cultural references in the world of translation and interpretation has generated much interest in recent decades. It has become one of the major theoretical-practical pillars in translation studies giving rise therefore to an inexhaustible and varied scientific production. This volume aims to be an approach to the translation of cultural references in the audiovisual and literary fields.

This volume presents research on second language learning through audiovisual input conducted within the SUBTiLL (Subtitles in Language Learning) project at the University of Barcelona. It includes studies exploring various language dimensions and skills such as vocabulary pronunciation and reading while also considering learner factors such as language learning aptitude and proficiency. Two distinctive features of this collective volume are 1) the inclusion of children and teenagers as participants in studies addressing the gap concerning young learners in this line of research and 2) an emphasis on longitudinal studies enhancing the ecological validity of the findings. The studies in this volume also showcase a diverse range of research instruments from eye-tracking to retrospective interviews enriching our comprehension of this innovative research area. A concluding chapter synthesizes these findings linking them to prior research and advancing our understanding of the role of audiovisual input in language acquisition.

This collection presents new research on key topics in anthropological linguistics with a focus on African languages. While Africanist linguists have long been concerned with sociocultural aspects of language structure and use no comprehensive volume dedicated to the anthropological linguistics of Africa has yet been published. This volume seeks to fill this gap. The chapters address a broad range of topics in anthropological linguistics including classic themes such as spatial reference color kin terms and emotion as well as emerging interests in the linguistic expression of personhood sociality and language ideology. All contributions are based on original empirical research and present insights into African language practices from a sociocultural perspective. The volume showcases research on dozens of African languages spoken across the continent with particular emphasis on languages of East Africa. This book will be of interest to areal specialists as well as to anthropological linguists worldwide.

This book proposes a new solution to the long-standing puzzle of auxiliary selection in Romance languages in particular Italian. The following questions are addressed: why the perfect auxiliary appears in the two forms be and have within a single language what drives this distribution and how cross-linguistic data can be accounted for. The solution to these issues consists of an Agreebased analysis that accounts for auxiliary selection in root clauses and restructuring in Standard Italian and in Italo-Romance varieties which is also compatible with participle agreement. By answering these questions the book also touches upon more theoretical and foundational problems such as the distribution of labor between syntax morphology and the lexicon and the conditions on the operation Agree (in particular multiple probing locality and minimality). This work contributes to the discussion in the fields of formal morpho-syntax theoretical linguistics and Romance linguistics.

This collected volume showcases cutting-edge research in the rapidly developing area of sign language corpus linguistics in various sign language contexts across the globe. Each chapter provides a detailed account of particular national corpora and methodological considerations in their construction. Part 1 focuses on corpus-based linguistic findings covering aspects of morphology syntax multilingualism and regional and diachronic variation. Part 2 explores innovative solutions to challenges in building and annotating sign language corpora touching on the construction of comparable sign language corpora collaboration challenges at the national level phonological arrangement of digital lexicons and (semi-)automatic annotation. This volume examines rhetorical conventions employed in mechanical engineering research to understand the knowledge-making principles of the discipline as well as their expression within the research article. In particular the study analyses the organisational patterns of mechanical engineering research articles using Swales’s conceptualisation of moves and steps. In addition the research identifies the phraseology associated with specific moves and steps. The study draws on a corpus of 120 mechanical engineering research articles equally distributed across two sub-disciplines (mechanical systems and thermal-fluids engineering) three research traditions (experimental theoretical and mixed methods) and two publication periods (2002–2006 and 2012–2016). It adopts an integrated methodology intertwining various approaches and perspectives including corpus linguistics move analysis discourse analysis and interviews to address two main strands of research enquiry: (i) What are the properties of the rhetorical structures in terms of range frequency and length for each section of mechanical engineering research articles? (ii) What effect does sub-discipline research tradition and publication date have on the rhetorical structure of research articles?

Within cognitive and functional approaches to language structure and grammaticality analogy and contrast represent two fundamental human cognitive capacities which up to now have mostly been examined separately. This volume seeks to bridge that gap and in doing so it brings together cutting-edge theoretical and empirical research in the field. The chapters in this book examine analogy and contrast across a variety of languages (English Finnish Hungarian Polish Russian) for different language phenomena (constructions lexical semantics morphology sentence structure text organization) and with the use of various methods (corpus linguistics discourse analysis experimental methods qualitative analysis quantitative analysis). This state-of-the-art research presented in the book should be of interest to specialists within Cognitive Linguistics corpus linguistics construction grammar discourse analysis translation studies metaphor research and cross-cultural research.

Since the early years of generative grammar (Chomsky 1977 inter alia) the phenomenology of dislocation has proved to be a fertile area of research. This however has not been the case for Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and hence this thorough monograph intends to fill this lacuna. Three aspects of this linguistic phenomenon stand out: the taxonomy of possible dislocated configurations syntax and interpretation. Though the structure in itself has been extensively studied in various languages including varieties of spoken Arabic this monograph shows that MSA presents properties that set it apart from known varieties and cannot be captured by an extension or modification of existing analyses. Moreover existing analyses are not fully satisfactory as there are open analytical questions regarding the interpretation and syntactic analysis of dislocation structures crosslinguistically. Particularly the optimal path to follow concerning dislocation structures in MSA is to argue for the claim that contrast as an information-structural notion underlies the interpretation of dislocated elements and these elements are best syntactically analyzed as being involved in a bisentential configuration contra monoclausal approaches to dislocation. This monograph should be relevant to anyone with an interest in the Arabic language and also to syntacticians and typologists with an interest in sentence structure.

This book stems from the joint effort of 25 research teams across Europe representing a dozen disciplines from the social sciences and humanities resulting in a radically novel perspective to the challenges of multilingualism in Europe. The various concepts and tools brought to bear on multilingualism are analytically combined in an integrative framework starting from a core insight: in its approach to multilingualism Europe is pursuing two equally worthy but non-converging goals namely the mobility of citizens across national boundaries (and hence across languages and cultures) and the preservation of Europe’s diversity which presupposes that each locale nurtures its linguistic and cultural uniqueness and has the means to include newcomers in its specific linguistic and cultural environment. In this book scholars from applied linguistics economics the education sciences finance geography history law political science philosophy psychology sociology and translation studies apply their specific approaches to this common challenge. Without compromising the state-of-the-art analysis proposed in each chapter particular attention is devoted to ensuring the cross-disciplinary accessibility of concepts and methods making this book the most deeply interdisciplinary volume on language policy and planning published to date.
