This volume reveals new insights on the faculty of language. By proposing a new approach in the analysis and description of Italian Sign Language (LIS) that can be extended also to other sign languages this book also enlightens some aspects of spoken languages which were often overlooked in the past and only recently have been brought to the fore and described. <br xmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.com/ns/"/>First the study of face-to-face communication leads to a revision of the traditional dichotomy between linguistic and enacted to develop a new approach to embodied language (Kendon 2004). <br/>Second all structures of language take on a sociolinguistic and pragmatic meaning as proposed by cognitive semantics which considers it impossible to trace a separation between purely linguistic and extralinguistic knowledge.<br/>Finally if speech from the point of view of its materiality is variable fragile and non-segmentable (i.e. not systematically discrete) also signs are not always segmentable into discrete invariable and meaningless units. This then calls into question some of the properties traditionally associated with human languages in general notably that of ‘duality of patterning’. <br/>These are only some of the main issues you will find in this volume that has no parallel both in sign and in spoken languages linguistic research.

Intersubjectivity is a precondition for human life – for social organization as well as for individual development and well-being. Through empirical examination of social interactions in everyday and institutional settings the authors in this volume explore the achievement and maintenance of intersubjectivity. The contributions show how language codes and creates intersubjectivity how interactants move towards shared understanding in interaction how intersubjectivity is central to phenomena and experiences often considered merely individual and how intersubjectivity evolves through learning. Input Processing is a theoretical framework on which the pedagogical paradigm called Processing Instruction is predicated. In this book new data on the acquisition of Italian and Modern Standard Arabic are presented and analyzed within this framework. Each study in the book explores how input processing strategies affect the acquisition of a particular linguistic feature and/or structure in the two languages. The studies use both offline (e.g. sentence and discourse-level tasks) and online tests (e.g. eye-tracking) to measure the effects of this instructional training.

What is the best way to analyze spontaneous spoken language? In their search for the basic units of spoken language the authors of this volume opt for a corpus-driven approach. They share a strong conviction that prosodic structure is essential for the study of spoken discourse and each bring their own theoretical and practical experience to the table. In the first part of the book they segment spoken material from a range of different languages (Russian Hebrew Central Pomo (an indigenous language from California) French Japanese Italian and Brazilian Portuguese). In the second part of the book each author analyzes the same two spoken English samples but looking at them from different perspectives using different methods of analysis as reflected in their respective analyses in Part I. This approach allows for common tendencies of segmentation to emerge both prosodic and segmental.

The articles collected in this volume offer new perspectives into the relevance of notions such as topic antitopic contrastive topic focus verum focus and theticity for the analysis of the syntax and semantics of modal particles sentence-final particles and other medial sentential and illocutive particles. This book addresses three great questions in a variety of languages ranging from Japanese to Mohawk including Basque French German Italian Kazakh Spanish and Turkish with some insights from English and Russian. The first question is the role played by information-structural strategies such as left dislocations clefts or the morphological marking of focus in the rise of discourse particles. In the second part papers are concerned with the relevance of information structure for the study of polysemic and polyfunctional discourse particles. Finally the contribution of particles to the determination of the information-structural profile of the clause is examined as well as their role in the information-structural specification of illocutionary types. Language-specific papers alternate with comparative approaches in order to show how newer insights on information structure can help resolve some of the classical issues of the linguistic research on particles.

The twenty-first century has seen a surge in cross-linguistic research on forms of address from increasingly diverse and complementary perspectives. The present edited collection is the inaugural volume of Topics in Address Research a series that aims to reflect that growing interest. This volume was originally inspired by a 2017 conference to honour the scholar and linguist Cao Xuân Hạo whose landmark work – in many diverse areas of language study – established a bridge between traditional Vietnamese scholarship and contemporary theories of grammatical organisation. The book offers the reader a closely edited collection of papers representing a wide spectrum of frameworks approaches and methods from traditional fieldwork studies of non-standard dialects to corpus-based discussions of language and gender to formal syntactic and semantic analyses of key functional morphemes to laboratory experiments and work in first language acquisition. This book offers a broad-based account of bilingual processing drawing on research findings and current thinking from various domains across cognitive science. The theoretical approach adopted is the Modular Cognition Framework in which language processing is characterized as an interaction between dedicated linguistic systems and the other modules of the human mind. The latter provide the 'internal context' of bilingual processing. This internal context involves goals value emotion self and representations of the external context. The book combines all these elements into a coherent picture of the bilingual's internal context and the way it shapes processing. It then shows how some central concepts in cognitive science and bilingualism fit in with – and follow from – this view.
