The political landscape in Europe is currently going through a phase of rapid change. New actors and movements that claim to represent 'the will of the people' are attracting considerable public attention with dramatic consequences for election outcomes. This volume explores the new political order with a particular focus on discursive constructions of 'the people' and the category of populism across the spectrum. It shows how a unitary representation of 'the people' is a central element in a vast range of very diverse political discourses today acting to anchor identities and project antagonisms in a multitude of settings. The chapters in this book explore commonality and contrast in representations of ‘the people’ in both radical and mainstream political movements looking in depth at recent political discourses in the European sphere. Recent years have seen a growing interest in linguistic phenomena whose formal manifestation and underlying licensing conditions represent the convergence of two or more areas of the grammar an area of investigation particularly invigorated in recent generative research by developments such as phase theory (cf. Chomsky 2001; 2008) and the cartographic enterprise (cf. Rizzi 1997; Cinque 1999). In this respect the dialects of Italy are no exception in that they present comparative Romance linguists and theoretical linguists alike with many valuable opportunities to study the linguistic interfaces as highlighted by the many case studies presented in this volume which provide a series of original insights into how different components of the linguistic system – syntactic phonetic phonological morphological semantic and pragmatic – do not necessarily operate in isolation but rather interact to license phenomena whose nature and distribution can only be fully understood in terms of the formal mapping between the interfaces.

Cognitive research in translation and interpreting has reached a critical threshold of maturity that is triggering rapid expansion along exciting new paths that potentially lead to deeper connections with other disciplines. Innovation and Expansion in Translation Process Research reflects this broadening scope and reach emphasizing ongoing methodological innovations diversification of research topics and questions and rich interactions with adjacent fields of research. The contributions to the volume can be grouped within four loosely defined themes: advances in traditional topics in translation process research including problems in translation translation competence or expertise and specialization of translators; advances in research into the emotional or affective aspects of translating and translator training; innovations in machine translation and post-editing; expansion of cognitively-oriented translation studies to include editing processes and reception studies. In middle-class Anglo-speaking circles imperatives are considered impolite forms that command another to do something; etiquette manuals recommend avoiding them. The papers in this collection de-construct such lay beliefs. Through the empirical examination of everyday and institutional interaction across a range of languages they show that imperatives are routinely used for constructing turns that further sociality in interactional situations. Moreover they show that for understanding the use of an imperatively formatted turn its specific design (whether it contains e.g. an overt subject object modal particles or diminutives) and its sequential and temporal positioning in verbal and embodied activities are crucial. The fact that the same type of imperative turn is appropriate under the same circumstances across linguistically diverse cultures suggests that there are common aspects of imperative turn design and common pragmatic dimensions of situations warranting their use. The volume provides new insights into the resources and processes involved when social actors try to get another to do something.

Although the term implicitness is ubiquitous in the pragmatic scholarship it has rarely constituted the focus of attention per se. This book aims to help crystallize the concept of implicitness by defining its linguistic boundaries as well as specifying and exploring its different communicative manifestations. The contributions by leading specialists scrutinize the main conceptualizations forms and occurrences of implicitness (such as implicature impliciture explicature entailment presupposition etc.) at different levels of linguistic organization. The volume focuses on phrasal sentential and discursive phenomena showcasing the richness and variety of implicit forms of communication systematizing (where possible) the existing analytic perspectives and identifying the most productive procedures for further exploration. Taken together the chapters exhibit theoretical differences that hinder a consensus on the nature of implicitness but they simultaneously reveal methodological points of contact and raise common questions thereby signposting a future analytic agenda. This collection provides a kaleidoscopic view of a range of identity struggles in the workplace context. It features twenty-two case studies that present an eclectic mix of workplaces in different socio-cultural contexts. They include among others household workers in Peru and Hong Kong female professionals in India and the UK social workers in Botswana and on Canadian reserves tourist guides in Europe and construction workers in New Zealand. The volume addresses important questions on professional competence group membership (sometimes competing) expectations and identity boundaries. The chapters establish that identity struggles are a reflection of issues of knowledge competing norms and attempts for social change.

The volume presents a selection of contributions related to integration adaptation language attitudes and language change among young Russian-speaking immigrants in Germany. At the turn of the century Germany which defined itself as a mono-ethnic and mono-racial society has become a country integrating various immigrant groups. Among those there are three different types of Russian immigrants: Russian Germans Russian Jews and ethnic Russians all three often perceived as “Russians” by the host country. The three groups have the same linguistic background but a different ethnicity known as “nationality” a separate entry in Russian official documents. This defined the immigration paths and the subsequent integration into German society where each group strives to position itself in relation to two other groups in the same migrant space. The book discusses the complexities of belonging and (self-/other) assignment to groups as well as the attitude to language maintenance among young Russian-speaking immigrants.

This book addresses the long discussed issue of Japanese interactive markers (traditionally called sentence-final particles) in a new light and provides the comprehensive linguistic documentation of the interactional functions of seven interactive markers: ne na yo sa wa zo and ze. By adopting three key notions ‘involvement’ ‘formality’ and ‘gender’ the study not only reveals the functions and pragmatic effects of each marker but also sheds light on some fundamental issues of the nature of spoken discourse in general including how speakers collaborate with each other to create and sustain their conversations and how linguistic functions of verbal forms interface with sociocultural norms. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in a wide range of linguistic fields such as Japanese linguistics pragmatics sociolinguistics discourse analysis and applied linguistics and to teachers and learners of Japanese and of a second/foreign language.
