The rise of influencers as power-players in the social media landscape is a defining feature of the digital era one that has received much attention from a variety of social science disciplines. But despite the key role that language along with other semiotic modes plays in the construction and communication of influencer selves discourse analytic and pragmatic research on the topic is lagging behind. This volume attempts to fill this void by offering contextually sensitive insights into influencers’ multi-modal communication on a range of platforms. The contributions rework established modes and tools of discourse analysis and pragmatics to shed empirical light on influencer identities and tensions (e.g. doing authenticity vis-à-vis promoting brands). Intonation in Language Contact : The case of Spanish in Catalonia

The intense language contact between Spanish and Catalan in Catalonia has led to cross-linguistic influence at all linguistic levels but its effect on the prosody of these languages has received little attention to date. Based on semi-spontaneous and read speech data from 31 Catalan–Spanish bilinguals this book provides a comprehensive analysis of the intonation of Spanish and Catalan as spoken in Girona with a focus on the speakers’ bilingualism. These contact varieties share numerous intonational properties with differences mainly in the frequency of specific tunes in certain contexts. However they also exhibit significant variation often linked to extralinguistic factors such as the bilinguals’ language dominance. Overall the intonation of these contact varieties results from substratum transfer and wholesale convergence between the prosodic systems of Spanish and Catalan.<br xmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.com/ns/"/>The book is particularly relevant to scholars researching prosody language contact variation and multilingualism.<br/>

The present volume is intended as a reference book on Wikipedia corpus studies from corpus construction to exploration and analysis. Wikipedia is a complex object difficult to manipulate for linguists and corpus researchers. In addition to the encyclopedic articles consulted by millions of users it contains vast spaces of written discussions aka talk pages where Wikipedia authors negotiate the collaborative editing of articles make evaluations or discuss related topics. The proposed volume covers Wikipedia articles their revision histories and discussions with a focus on discussions which have not been studied extensively so far and have also been neglected in previous corpus building efforts. Wikipedia discussions are instances of computer-mediated communication (CMC) thus constituting a completely different interaction-oriented linguistic genre. Sophisticated tools and methods of linguistic annotation and corpus exploration are needed to exploit the huge and valuable corpus resources that can be constructed from the Wikipedia discussions. The present volume aims at encouraging and facilitating Wikipedia corpus studies providing standards recommendations and innovative methods to build and explore Wikipedia corpora and presenting corpus studies that make the most of the peculiarities of Wikipedia.

This volume consists of a collection of empirical studies and research syntheses investigating the role of individual difference (ID) variables in task-based language teaching (TBLT)—a pedagogical approach that emphasizes the importance of the performance of meaning-oriented tasks in facilitating second language learning. TBLT is subject to learner-external as well as learner-internal factors with the former referring to task- and context-related factors and the latter to ID factors pertaining to learner traits dispositions or propensities. To date the research has focused primarily on learner-external factors and there has been insufficient and unsystematic research on individual difference factors. This volume brings centre stage this important but under-researched dimension by means of a comprehensive in-depth examination of the role of key ID factors in TBLT. The volume integrates theory research and pedagogy by spelling out the mechanism through which IDs influence learning attainment behaviours and processes examining evidence for theoretical claims and discussing ways to apply research findings and cater to individual differences in the task-based classroom.

Imperative Turns at Talk : The design of directives in action

In middle-class Anglo-speaking circles imperatives are considered impolite forms that command another to do something; etiquette manuals recommend avoiding them. The papers in this collection de-construct such lay beliefs. Through the empirical examination of everyday and institutional interaction across a range of languages they show that imperatives are routinely used for constructing turns that further sociality in interactional situations. Moreover they show that for understanding the use of an imperatively formatted turn its specific design (whether it contains e.g. an overt subject object modal particles or diminutives) and its sequential and temporal positioning in verbal and embodied activities are crucial. The fact that the same type of imperative turn is appropriate under the same circumstances across linguistically diverse cultures suggests that there are common aspects of imperative turn design and common pragmatic dimensions of situations warranting their use. The volume provides new insights into the resources and processes involved when social actors try to get another to do something.
Imdeduya : Variants of a myth of love and hate from the Trobriand Islands of Papua New Guinea

This volume presents five variants of the Imdeduya myth: two versions of the actual myth a short story a song and John Kasaipwalova’s English poem “Sail the Midnight Sun”. This poem draws heavily on the Trobriand myth which introduces the protagonists Imdeduya and Yolina and reports on Yolina’s intention to marry the girl so famous for her beauty on his long journey to Imdeduya’s village and on their tragic love story. The texts are compared with each other with a final focus on the clash between orality and scripturality. Contrary to Kasaipwalova’s fixed poetic text the oral Imdeduya versions reveal the variability characteristic for oral tradition. This variability opens up questions about traditional stability and destabilization of oral literature especially questions about the changing role of myth – and magic – in the Trobriand Islanders' society which gets more and more integrated into the by now “literal” nation of Papua New Guinea.
Implicitness : From lexis to discourse

This book aims to help crystallize the concept of implicitness by defining its linguistic boundaries as well as specifying and exploring its different communicative manifestations. Integration, Identity and Language Maintenance in Young Immigrants : Russian Germans or German Russians

The volume presents a selection of contributions related to integration adaptation language attitudes and language change among young Russian-speaking immigrants in Germany. At the turn of the century Germany which defined itself as a mono-ethnic and mono-racial society has become a country integrating various immigrant groups. Among those there are three different types of Russian immigrants: Russian Germans Russian Jews and ethnic Russians all three often perceived as “Russians” by the host country. The three groups have the same linguistic background but a different ethnicity known as “nationality” a separate entry in Russian official documents. This defined the immigration paths and the subsequent integration into German society where each group strives to position itself in relation to two other groups in the same migrant space. Imperatives and directive strategies have intrigued both formalists and functionalists. They continue to search for the answers to questions like “what are the semantics of the imperative?” “how is it used (in the world’s languages)?” and “which factors determine the choice between imperatives and other directive strategies?”. This volume takes a broadly functional-typological perspective and contributes to the literature in several respects. It presents new data from a variety of languages some of which have not been studied in depth before. IntraLatino Language and Identity : MexiRican Spanish

The increasing diversity of the U.S. Latino population has given rise to a growing population of “mixed” Latinos. This is a study of such individuals raised in Chicago Illinois who have one Mexican parent and one Puerto Rican parent most of whom call themselves “MexiRicans.” Given that these two varieties of Spanish exhibit highly salient differences these speakers can be said to experience intrafamilial dialect contact. The book first explores the lexicon discourse marker use and phonological features among two generations of over 70 MexiRican speakers finding several connections to parental dialect neighborhood demographics and family dynamics. Drawing from critical mixed race theory it then examines MexiRicans’ narratives about their ethnic identity including the role of Spanish features in the ways in which they are accepted or challenged by monoethnic monodialectal Mexicans and Puerto Ricans both in Chicago and abroad. These findings contribute to our understandings of dialect contact U.S. Spanish and the role of language in ethnic identity.

Intonation units have been notoriously difficult to identify in natural talk. Problems include fuzzy boundaries lack of exhaustivity and the potential circularity involved when studying their interface with other language-organizational dimensions. This volume advocates a way to resolve such problems: the ‘cesura’ approach. Cesuras or breaks in the flow of talk are created by discontinuities in the prosodic-phonetic parameters of speech that cluster to various extents at certain points in time. Using conversation-analytic and interactional-linguistic methodology the volume identifies the parameters creating cesuras in talk-in-interaction and proposes ways to notate them depending on the researcher’s goal. The book examines how task-based language teaching (TBLT) can be carried out with young beginner learners in a foreign language context. It addresses how TBLT can be introduced and implemented in a difficult instructional context where traditional teaching approaches are entrenched. The book reports a study that examined how TBLT can be made to work in such a context. The study compares the effectiveness of TBLT and the traditional “present-practice-produce” (PPP) approach for teaching English to young beginner learners in Japan. The TBLT researched in this study is unique as it employed input-based tasks rather than oral production tasks. The study shows that such tasks constitute an ideal means of inducting beginner learners into listening and processing English. It also shows that such tasks lead naturally to the learners trying to use the L2 in communication. It provides evidence to support the claim that TBLT promotes the kind of naturalistic interaction which is beneficial for the development of both interactional and linguistic competence. The book concludes with suggestions for how to implement TBLT in Japanese school contexts.

The In-Situ Approach to Sluicing

It has been standardly claimed since Merchant (2001) that island violations can be repaired by simply deleting the categories that induce such violations as witnessed by sluicing an ellipsis construction that deletes TP with a remnant wh-phrase. This book aims to argue that such “repair by ellipsis” is simply a myth. Alternatively the author argues for what is called the in-situ approach to sluicing originally proposed by Kimura (2007 2010) according to which the remnant wh-phrase in sluicing stays in situ. This approach immediately explains the island-insensitivity of sluicing since no overt wh-movement is involved in the derivation of this construction. Hence it challenges the approach in terms of island repair by ellipsis in that it nullifies the necessity of a repair mechanism. This book makes an important contribution to the field in providing an alternative way of approaching ellipsis phenomena that are claimed to induce “island repair.”

This book investigates French impersonals as a functional category. Any structure whose agent is defocused and whose predicate describes a situation stable enough to be generally available should be considered impersonal. In addition to il impersonals the category also includes demonstrative (ce/ça) middle (se) and indefinite (on) structures. These different forms belong to the same functional category because they systematically code general and predictable events that cannot be imputed to a specific cause. Because generality and predictability are gradual notions impersonals can only be identified within the context of specific constructional islands which therefore constitute the organizing principle of the French impersonal category.

Idiomatic Constructions in Italian : A Lexicon-Grammar approach

This study is devoted to the analysis of Italian idioms with either ordinary or support verbs (also called light verbs). The research focuses on the exhaustive description of idioms and is based on their systematic classification according to the principles of the Lexicon-Grammar methodology developed by Maurice Gross (1975 1979 and further). A thorough examination of the literature shows strong disagreement on the acceptability of some idiomatic constructions. For this reason the Web was used as a corpus to verify judgments on the supposed ungrammatical constructions. This approach showed that idiomatic constructions which have always been considered ungrammatical are instead perfectly acceptable if contextualized. The results obtained include the following: passive is not a "special case" when it concerns idioms and idiomatic constructions show the same complexity as non-idiomatic constructions.

Recent years saw a growing interest in the study of subjectivity as the linguistic expression of speaker involvement. Intersubjectivity defined by Traugott as "the linguistic expression of a speaker/writer's attention to the hearer/reader" on the other hand has so far received little explicit attention in its own right let alone systematic definition and operationalization. Intersubjectivity and seemingly related notions such as interpersonal meaning appraisal stance and metadiscourse frequently appear in cognitive-functional accounts as well as historical and more applied approaches. These domains offer (partly) conflicting uses of 'intersubjectivity' differ in the overall scope of the concept and the phenomena it may cover.This book brings together contributions from a variety of different approaches with the aim of disentangling the current web of intertwined notions of intersubjectivity. This edition constitutes a reprint of Niels Ege’s English translation of Rasmus Rask’s prize essay of 1818 which appeared as volume XXVI in the Travaux du Cercle Linguistique de Copenhague in 1993. The prize essay was published in Danish in 1818. In contrast to other works by Rask notably his introduction to the study of Icelandic it was never reissued until Louis Hjelmslev published a corrected version in Danish as part of his edition of Rask’s selected works. While Rask lived a substantial part of the book was translated into German. The present work is however the only translation of the work into English and indeed into any other language. It is to be hoped that the field of the history of linguistics will hereby receive a new impetus to scrutinize the early beginnings of Indo-European scholarship. But just as importantly the translation of this work of genius reveals that even if details in the substantial treatment of the various branches of language have now been superseded the theoretical parts of the book are still worth reading by all linguists for their own sake.
