A Practical Course in Terminology Processing
Author(s): Juan C. SagerPublication Date January 1990More LessSince the advent of the computer, terminology management can be carried out by almost anyone who has learnt to use a computer. Terminology management has proved to be an efficient tool in international communications in industry, education and international organisations. Software packages are readily available and international corporations often have their own terminology database. Following these developments, translators and terminologists are confronted with a specialised form of information management involving compilation and standardisation of vocabulary, storage, retrieval and updating.A Practical Course in Terminology Processing provides the key to methods of terminology management for the English language, for general and specific purposes. This unique course has been developed on the basis of years of teaching experience and research at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST, UK) and is particularly suitable for translation courses, freelance translators, technical writers, as well as for non-linguists who are confronted with terminology processing as part of their profession.
The 1996 reprint of the paperback edition includes an index.

Das Problem des Unendlichen im ausgehenden 14. Jahrhundert
Author(s): Thomas DewenderPublication Date December 2002More LessThe focus of this book is on the theory of infinity in Lawrence of Lindores’ commentary on Aristotle’s “Physics”. Written shortly before 1400, Lindores’ text played an important role in disseminating the natural philosophy of John Buridan and his disciples in the 15th century. In the first part of this book, Lindores’ concept of science is discussed and a detailed analysis of his treatment of infinity and related topics (continuity, the eternity of the world) is given. Subsequently an assessment of his ideas from the point of view of modern mathematics is attempted and some interesting similarities between medieval theories of infinity and recent developments in mathematics are outlined. The second part contains the relevant questions from Lindores’ commentary (book I, qu. 1-5, 10; book III, qu. 13-18; book VI, qu. 9-10; book VIII, qu. 3), which are presented here for the first time in a critical edition based on all seven manuscripts of the text.

Editor(s): Burkhard Mojsisch and Orrin F. SummerellPublication Date October 2002More LessThe disciplines of philosophy make up its methodological and thematic branches of study; they reflect its self-understanding as a science according to both its basic tasks and its different approaches to them. The contributions to this anthology, arranged according to the main disciplines of philosophy, were originally presented in a special lecture series at the Department of Philosophy of the Ruhr-University Bochum, geared towards providing students with a much-needed provisional orientation in the field. The essays included in this volume combine this introductory systematic character with careful historical scholarship. Topics treated include aesthetics, epistemology, ethics, logic, metaphysics, philosophical anthropology, philosophical pedagogy, philosophy of language, philosophy of nature, philosophy of religion, political philosophy, and the theory of the human sciences. This volume should appeal to students and teachers of philosophy as well as to all those interested in a historically grounded systematic introduction to philosophical thinking.

Author(s): Elżbieta SkłodowskaPublication Date April 1991More LessIn this brilliant overview of parodic praxis in the Spanish-American novel during the years 1960-1985, Elzbieta Skłodowska examines several aspects of parody: its role in the renovation of anachronistic forms of discourse (mock-epic) and the re-writing of the canon of the historical novel; its function in transgressing literary formulas (detective novel); its subversive quality in the counter-discourse of women writers; and the relation between parody, satire, irony, humor, and metafiction. This sound analysis of some twenty-five novels, carefully illustrated by works little treated in critical discourse, takes as its theoretical basis the works of the Russian Formalists and Linda Hutcheon's theory of parody.

Les Périphrases Verbales
Editor(s): Hava Bat-Zeev Shyldkrot and Nicole Le QuerlerPublication Date December 2005More LessThis comprehensive volume contains twenty-six out of thirty three papers that were presented at the International Conference on "Les Périphrases Verbales". The conference took place at the University of Caen-Basse-Normandie from June 25th to June 28th 2003, and was co-organized by the Crisco umr cnrs research group and the French Department at Tel Aviv University, Israel. The contributors to this volume aim to present a broad spectrum of theoretical approaches to the analysis of constructions entitled "périphrases verbales". Their work revolves around three central themes: the definition of these constructions and the distinction between certain verbal expressions and true periphrastic expressions; a particular meaning or function of these expressions; and specific nominal constructions considered as periphrastic expressions. The volume is divided into seven sections, each throwing light on a particular aspect of periphrastic expression from various perspectives. The issues discussed are: temporal and aspectual periphrases; auxiliaries, copula, and support verbs; causative periphrases; venire and aller + infinitive / participle; inchoative periphrases; modal periphrases; and the heritage of Gustave Guillaume.

Palenquero and Spanish in Contact
Author(s): John M. LipskiPublication Date March 2020More LessBilingual speakers are normally aware of what language they are speaking or hearing; there is, however, no widely accepted consensus on the degree of lexical and morphosyntactic similarity that defines the psycholinguistic threshold of distinct languages. This book focuses on the Afro-Colombian creole language Palenquero, spoken in bilingual contact with its historical lexifier, Spanish. Although sharing largely cognate lexicons, the languages are in general not mutually intelligible. For example, Palenquero exhibits no adjective-noun or verb-subject agreement, uses pre-verbal tense-mood-aspect particles, and exhibits unbounded clause-final negation. The present study represents a first attempt at mapping the psycholinguistic boundaries between Spanish and Palenquero from the speakers’ own perspective, including traditional native Palenquero speakers, adult heritage speakers, and young native Spanish speakers who are acquiring Palenquero as a second language. The latter group also provides insights into the possible cognitive cost of “de-activating” Spanish morphological agreement as well as the relative efficiency of pre-verbal vs. clause-final negation. In this study, corpus-based analyses are combined with an array of interactive experimental techniques, demonstrating that externally-imposed classifications do not always correspond to speakers’ own partitioning of language usage in their communities.

Papers from the 4th International Conference on English Historical Linguistics, Amsterdam, April 10–13, 1985
Editor(s): Roger Eaton, Olga Fischer, Willem F. Koopman and Frederike van der LeekPublication Date January 1985More LessThese papers are a selection from papers presented at the 4th International Conference on English Historical Linguistics (Amsterdam, 1985). Most studies deal with some aspect of an earlier stage of English, though present day varieties of English are also under investigation. Many of the papers show that there is a growing interest in the question why a certain change has taken place. Furthermore, the volume contains a considerable number of papers on historical syntax.

Papers from the 7th International Conference on Historical Linguistics
Editor(s): Anna Giacalone Ramat, Onofrio Carruba and Giuliano BerniniPublication Date January 1987More LessThese papers, deriving from the 7th International Conference on Historical Linguistics (ICHL) in Pavia in 1984, provide an overview of the current status of research in this field. They clearly show that new issues are emerging in the theory of linguistic change which tend to incorporate non-autonomous principles like naturalness in phonetic processes, the influence of socio-cultural settings and discourse pragmatics.
