Medieval Mereology
Jan 1991
Book
Author(s):
Desmond Paul Henry
Mereology is the theory which deals with parts and wholes in the concrete sense and this study follows its varied fortunes during the Middle Ages. Preliminary indications as to its metaphysical situation are followed by a brief sketch of Boethius' contribution. Peter Abelard Gilbert of Poitiers Clarembald of Arras and Joscelin of Soissons are among the twelfth-century authors examined. The effect of the subsequent recovery of Aristotle's Metaphysica on Mereology is typified by sketches of the many and varied uses made of the latter by Aquinas. A brief sample of Buridanian treatment is followed by an account of those applications made under the umbrella of thirteenth-century comment on Aristotle's De Sophisticis Elenchis. The curiously original theories of Wyclif are brought to light as also also samples from Walter Bruleigh Nicholas of Paris William of Ockham and Paul of Venice. Readers interested in such subjects as logic metaphysics philosophy theology linguistics pyschology and their history will find the work relevant to their studies. No logical symbolism is used in the main body of the book but some contemporary background is appended so that those who wish to do so may follow it up.

Avec une importante intervention d’A.J. Greimas qui répond ice sure un ton quasi improvisé aux questions de l’assistance. Débat avec Paul Ricœur (résumé).
Current Advances in Semantic Theory
Jan 1991
Book
Editor(s):
Maxim I. Stamenov
This volume contains selected contributions to the interdisciplinary symposium on 'Models of Meaning' held in Varna September 25-28 1988 under the auspices of the Institute of the Bulgarian Language of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The aim of the meeting was to broaden the horizons of meaning research and the modeling of linguistic semantics with contributions centering on the appropriate modeling of lexical syntactic and textual-semantic representations. The papers challenge some basic notions of semantics and reveal two main avenues of development in contemporary investigations. One is toward broadening the scope of investigativeness the second is toward a greater domain-specificity as expressed in a greater sensitivity to pragmatics and meta-pragmatic concerns.<br xmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.com/ns/"/>
A Dictionary of English Normative Grammar 1700–1800 (DENG)
Jan 1991
Book
Author(s):
Bertil Sundby,
Anne Kari Bjørge and
Kari E. Haugland
Eighteenth-century English grammarians plead eloquently for purity precision and perspicuity but their method of teaching largely amounts to citing examples of impurity imprecision and lack of clarity from contemporary writings. This book is the first of its kind to provide a detailed systematic account of such 'errors'. Apart from source and page references the Dictionary gives the context of the error (I have not wept this forty years) the correct or 'target' form ('these forty years') the name of the authors quoted by the grammarians ('Addison' 'Swift') and the labels which sum up their assessment of the error ('absurd' 'solecism'). It operates with error categories such as ambiguity ellipsis and government (fourteen in all) which are subdivided into grammatically described main entries subentries and so on. The Introduction includes a guide to the use of the Dictionary the grammatical code and a discussion of grammatical concepts error typologies problems of identifying literary sources attitudes to correctness grammatical figures and other topics. A Bibliography and an Index of lexical items and technical terms round off the volume. The way the Dictionary is organized should make it possible to find in it the answer to a wide variety of questions pertaining to grammar style and linguistic historiography.
Dutch Literature in the Age of Rembrandt : Themes and ideas
Jan 1991
Book
Author(s):
Maria A. Schenkeveld
Dutch literature of the 17th century while not as famous as other elements of the culture of the Dutch Golden Age deserves independent focus not only because of its own intrinsic worth but also because of the evidence of strong social concern that it presents and the light it sheds on other aspects of the Golden Age. Despite this outside the Netherlands the literature has not been examined closely undoubtedly because of the language barrier but also because there is no reasonable introduction to the material in English. This book fills that lacuna. Richly illustrated it groups its subjects thematically: politics religion nature daily life. Because Golden Age painting in particular is so famous the book devotes a special chapter to the connection between poetry and painting. A concluding chapter shows the republic's function as a European literary trading center with brisk import and export. Included also are texts and translations of poems and extensive bibliographies for further study.<br xmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.com/ns/"/>

Aspects of a Cognitive-Pragmatic Theory of Language : On cognition, functionalism, and grammar
Jan 1991
Book
Author(s):
Jan Nuyts
This book is about a theory of language that combines two observations (1) that language is based on an extensive cognitive infrastructure (cognitivism) and (2) that it is functional for its user (functionalism). These observations are regarded as two dimensions of one phenomenon that both need to be accounted for simultaneously and coherently in accounting for language. Chapter 1 presents the cognitivist and functionalist points of view and their interrelation and discusses the integration of language research under a cognitive umbrella; the issue of defining 'functions of language' and the formalism-functionalism debate. Chapter 2 criticizes the Chomskyan formalist conception of language and cognition from the perspective of cognitive-pragmatic theory. The focus is on different aspects of the competence-performance dichotomy and in particular on the nature of linguistic knowledge. The ontogenesis and phylogenesis of language are also discussed. Chapter 3 deals with the potential contribution of a functional-linguistic grammar to an integrated conception of the cognitive systems of language viz. Dik's Functional Grammar and introduces the concept of a Functional Procedural Grammar as a more integrative model for language production. Special attention is also paid to the nature of conceptual knowledge and the relationship between language production and interpretation. The debate is illustrated by an analysis of negative-raising.

Zarathustra and the Ethical Ideal : Timely meditations on philosophy
Jan 1991
Book
Author(s):
Robert H. Cousineau
This work defines its course in reference to Nietzsche's Also Sprach Zarathustra. The author uses Zarathustra to reflect how our understanding is wedded to affective modes thematizing especially laughter fear awe and hope. The book invites us to rethink how to overcome some relevant impasses of contemporary analytic hermeneutic and (post)deconstructionist thought. The author seeks the dialogue with the texts and the reader and gradually brings to the fore the ethical. In the words of the author: Most works on Nietzsche talk about him few address him much less invite the reader to walk with him. It is time for a dialogical itinerary.
Translation : Theory and Practice, Tension and Interdependence
Jan 1991
Book
Editor(s):
Mildred L. Larson
This book is a collection of articles which highlight the fact that good translation theory is based on information gained from practice. At the same time good practice is based on carefully worked-out theory. The two are interdependent. The authors who have contributed are persons who know the importance of both theory and practice and the tension between the two. They are not only translators but also have long experience in training others. <br xmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.com/ns/"/> The articles cover a wide variety of topics grouped in five sections. The first presents four graphic descriptions of what happens when one translates. The second looks at aspects of the application of theory from the backgrounds of European and Asian translation practices. The third has excellent articles which apply theory to the fields of poetry opera drama and humor. The fourth section provides four ways of putting theory into practice. The fifth gives language specific examples and the last section deals with the application of theory and practice to teaching in an academic context.

Poetry as Play : 'Gongorismo' and the 'Comedia.'
Jan 1991
Book
Author(s):
María Cristina Quintero
During the Golden Age poetry and drama entered into a dynamic intertextual and intergeneric exchange. The Comedia appropriated the different poetic currents prevalent during the Renaissance and also often enacted the controversies surrounding poetic language. Of particular interest is the influence of gongorismo on the comedia. Luis de Góngora himself experimented with dramatic form in his two little-known plays Las firmezas de Isabela and El doctor Carlino. In his quest for effective dramatic language Lope de Vega dramatized Gongorine language through both parody and respectful imitation. Calderón de la Barca whose plays represent the culmination of Góngora's influence on Golden Age theater transformed gongorismo into a rich performative code that functions simultaneously as poetic discourse and dramatic convention.

Le discours aspectualisé
Jan 1991
Book
Editor(s):
Jacques Fontanille
