The phenomenon of insubordination can be defined diachronically as the recruitment of main clause structures from subordinate structures or synchronically as the independent use of constructions exhibiting characteristics of subordinate clauses. Long marginalised as uncomfortable exceptions insubordinated clause phenomena turn out to be surprisingly widespread and provide a vital empirical testing ground for various central theoretical issues in current linguistics – the interplay of langue and parole the emergence of structure the question of where productive syntactic rules give way to constructions the role of prosody in language change and the question of how far grammars are produced by isolated speakers as opposed to being collaboratively constructed in dialogue. Master Nicholas of Amsterdam was a prominent master of arts in Germany during the first half of the fifteenth century. He composed various commentaries on Aristotle’s works. One of these commentaries is on the logica vetus the old logic viz. on Porphyry’s Isagoge and on Aristotle’s Categories and On Interpretation. This commentary is edited and introduced here.
Nicholas is a ‘modernus’ – as opposed to the ‘antiqui’ who were realists – which means that he is a conceptualist belonging to the university tradition that accepted John Buridan (ca. 1300-1360 or 1361) and Marsilius of Inghen (ca. 1340-1396) as its masters. In medieval philosophy a parallel between thinking and reality is generally upheld. Nicholas makes a sharp distinction between the two; this may be interpreted as a step towards a separation between the two realms as is common in philosophy in later centuries.
Other characteristics of Nicholas are that he defends the position that science has its place in a proposition and does not simply follow reality. Furthermore he emphasizes the part played by individual things.
Fifteenth-century philosophy has hardly been studied mainly because that century has long been considered unoriginal. Nicholas of Amsterdam certainly deserves the historian’s interest in order to evaluate how medieval philosophy prepared the way for modern philosophy.

Volume 2 of A Comparative History of Literatures in the Iberian Peninsula brings to an end this collective work that aims at surveying the network of interliterary relations in the Iberian Peninsula. No attempt at such a comparative history of literatures in the Iberian Peninsula has been made until now. Ugandan English is a variety that has scarcely been noticed in past research. This timely volume brings together African and European scholars in a first-ever collection of articles that offer comprehensive discussions of the historical and present-day sociolinguistics of English in Uganda and fine-grained analyses of the structural characteristics of and attitudes to this hitherto largely unknown variety. This book examines delexical verb + noun collocations such as make a decision give rise to and take care of in Swedish and Chinese learner English. Using a methodological framework that combines learner corpus research with a contrastive perspective the study is one of the very few in the field to incorporate corpora of the learner’s L1 to investigate the effects of L1 influence. The book provides a highly detailed and multi-faceted analysis of delexical verb + noun collocations in terms of frequency of occurrence lexical preferences and morphosyntactic patterns. Quantitative and qualitative results on overuse underuse and errors are presented with linguistically and pedagogically relevant interpretations that include cultural and discourse aspects. The poems of John Ashbery Lyn Hejinian and Ron Silliman may seem to offer endless small details of expression observation thought and narrative which fail to hang together even from one line to the next. But as Elina Siltanen shows here this extraordinary flow of uncoordinated detail can stimulate readers to join the poets in a delightful exploration of ordinary language. When readers take a poem in this spirit they actually begin to read as members of a community: the community not only of themselves and other readers but also including the poet and other poets plus all the speakers of the language in which the poem is written. For all these different parties that language is indeed a shared resource and the way for readers to get started is simply by recalling or imagining some of the numerous kinds of context in which the given poem’s words-phrases-sentences could or could not be successfully used. The rewards for such proactive readers are on the one hand a heightened sense of the subtle interweavings of language and life and on the other hand a freshly empowered self-confidence. The point being that within the community of contemporary experimental poetry poets have no more authority than readers. Rejecting older cultural hierarchies they present themselves as teasing out the idiomatic serendipities of their own poems together with their readers.

Switch reference is a grammatical process that marks a referential relationship between arguments of two (or more) verbs. Typically it has been characterized as an inflection pattern on the verb itself encoding identity or non-identity between subject arguments separately from traditional person or number marking. In the 50 years since William Jacobsen’s coinage of the term switch reference has evolved from an exotic phenomenon found in a handful of lesser-known languages to a widespread feature found in geographically and linguistically unconnected parts of the world. The growing body of information on the topic raises new theoretical and empirical questions about the development functions and nature of switch reference as well as the internal variation between different switch-reference systems. The contributions to this volume discuss these and other questions for a wide variety of languages from all over the world and endevaour to demonstrate the full functional and morphosyntactic range of the phenomenon.

This edited volume brings together the latest research on fictive interaction that is the use of the frame of ordinary conversation as a means to structure cognition (talking to oneself) discourse (monologues organized as dialogues) and grammar (“why me? attitude”). This follows prior work on the subject by Esther Pascual and other authors most of whom are also contributors to this volume. The 17 chapters in the volume explore fictive interaction as a fundamental cognitive phenomenon as a ubiquitous discourse-structuring device as a possibly universal linguistic construction and as an effective communicative strategy in persuasion and language pathology. This volume brings together a number of articles on the form and function of extra-clausal constituents a group of linguistic elements which have puzzled linguists by defying analysis in terms of ordinary sentence grammar. Given their high frequency and communicative importance these elements can however no longer be dismissed as a marginal linguistic phenomenon. In recent years this awareness has resulted not only in more systematic treatments of extra-clausal constituents but has also highlighted the need to account for them in grammatical theory. Based on (mainly English) corpus data the volume investigates the discourse-pragmatic semantic syntactic and phonological features of a range of extra-clausal constituents including discourse markers free adjuncts left dislocands insubordinate clauses and various kinds of adverbials. The individual chapters adopt a number of different perspectives investigating the diachronic development of extra-clausal constituents their multi-functionality and their use in bilingual settings also addressing the question of how they can be incorporated into existing models of grammar.

Reembedding Translation Process Research is a rich collection of empirical research papers investigating important new facets of the relationship between translation and cognition. The common thread running through the collection is the notion of “re-embedding” the acts of translating and interpreting—and the ways we understand them. That is they all aim to re-situate these acts within what we now know about the brain the powerful relationship of brain and body and the complex interaction between cognition and the environment in which it is embedded. Each chapter focuses on a particular aspect of the overall notion of re-embedding thereby expanding the breadth of empirical research about translating. This book refuses Descartes' distinction between mind and brain and reaffirms the highly dynamic emergent and interactive nature of cognitive processes in translation. The overarching conclusion is that translation studies should reconsider re-embed any model of translation processes that arises without properly accommodating the interdependence of brain body and environment in the emergence of cognition.
