The Biblical Book of Daniel : The Catalan Translation by the French Hebraist Maties Delcor

Delcor (1919-1992) is responsible for a translation of the Book of Daniel which is the only Catalan version of a book of the Bible produced by a North Catalan author to be included in Fundació Bíblica Catalana’s 1968 Bible. This unique circumstance was the inspiration to recover this translation and publish it in a scientific edition collated with the original texts from which Delcor worked. The introduction situates this singular work in the context of the long history of biblical translations in Catalan and offers an exegetical approach to this work that tradition has transmitted in three languages of the ancient world: Hebrew Aramaic and Greek. English equivalents of all of the texts have been added as a further point of comparison.

This book contains an edited and contextualized collection of poetry that is preserved without an author's name in a manuscript in the Vatican Apostolic Library. The internal and external analysis of the manuscript has made it possible to attribute it to Joan Salom (or Salon) a Franciscan monk who in addition to being a noted hebraist and astronomer had an important role in reforming the Gregorian calendar and who is here also revealed as a poet. Beyond the interest of adding previously unknown lyrics to the Catalan literary production of the 1500s this songbook is important because it is situated at the time when the new Italian poetic forms of the Renaissance were being introduced in Catalan poetry.<br xmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.com/ns/"/>Aquest llibre edita i contextualitza un petit recull de poesies que avui es conserva sense nom d’autor dins un manuscrit de la Biblioteca Apostòlica Vaticana. L’anàlisi interna i externa del manuscrit ha permès atribuir-lo amb tota seguretat a Joan Salom (o Salon) un frare franciscà que a més d’hebraista i astrònom reconegut –va tenir un paper important en la reforma del calendari gregorià– se’ns revela doncs també com a poeta. A les composicions hi ha elogis a alguns contemporanis algunes peces de caràcter devot i unes quantes poesies adreçades a un amor frustrat envers una monja barcelonina. Més enllà de l’interès que té augmentar la producció literària catalana del Cinc-cents amb uns textos desconeguts aquest cançoner és important perquè se situa en el moment en què les noves formes poètiques italianes del renaixement s’introdueixen en la poesia catalana.
Historical Pragmatics of Controversies : Case studies from 1600 to 1800

The book gives an introduction to the new research field of Historical Pragmatics of Controversies and provides seven case studies (from 1609 to 1796) on controversies in the fields of astronomy/astrology medicine chemistry philosophy and theology. The protagonists of these controversies include both famous authors like Kepler Hobbes and Leibniz and internationally less known authors like the German theologian A.H. Francke and the chemist F.A.C. Gren. The case studies examine the organizing principles of historical controversies language use moves and strategies topic management and text organisation and the adherence to communication principles in these controversies. At the same time they analyse the use of different text types and media in the course of controversies including pamphlets journal articles reviews scientific handbooks and letters. In addition the case studies demonstrate early modern writers’ resources from disputation practice dialectic and rhetoric and show developments of the practice of polemical writing during this period.

This book offers the most comprehensive up-to-date multidisciplinary approach to the work of Galician jongleur Martin Codax and the Vindel Parchment. This medieval manuscript with the texts of seven cantigas de amigo by Martin Codax and the music score of six of them is a philological gem that underwent numerous vicissitudes. The current volume comprises eighteen chapters dealing in depth with Codax’s work and the Vindel Parchment from five basic perspectives: literature; linguistics codicology and ecdotics; music; history and reception of the Vindel Parchment; and the historical background of medieval Vigo (at the time still a small town where Codax’s cantigas de amigo are set). Specialists from different disciplines and countries joined forces in a effort to improve our understanding of Martin Codax and his lyric poetry. The research included here tries to go beyond received knowledge in the field by using new approaches and perspectives delving deeper into areas that had not been sufficiently studied or by venturing into unexplored territories. Many hypotheses are put forward contributing to raising interest in a fascinating enigmatic author in his extraordinary cantigas and in a medieval parchment that is becoming less and less mysterious. The volume contains contributions in English Spanish Italian Portuguese and Galician each accompanied by a summary in English.

The polarity of a sentence is crucial for its meaning. It is thus hardly surprising that languages have developed devices to highlight this meaning component and to contrast statements with negative and positive polarity in discourse. Research on this issue has started from languages like German and Dutch where prosody and assertive particles are systematically associated with polarity contrast. Recently the grammatical realization of polarity contrast has been at the center of investigations in a range of other languages as well. Core questions concern the formal repertoire and the exact meaning contribution of the relevant devices the kind of contrast they evoke and their relation to information structure and sentence mood. This study offers a pragmatic dimension to World Englishes research. It is particularly timely because pragmatics has generally been understudied in past research on World Englishes especially postcolonial Englishes. Apart from drawing attention to the paucity of research the book also contributes to theory formation on the emerging theoretical framework postcolonial pragmatics which is then applied to data from two World (postcolonial) Englishes Ghanaian and Cameroon Englishes. The copious examples used clearly illustrate how postcolonial societies realise various pragmatic phenomena in this case offers and offer refusals and how these could be fruitfully explained using an analytical framework designed on the complex internal set ups of these societies. For research on social interaction in these societies to be representative it has to take into account the complex history of their evolution contact with other systems during colonialism and the heritages thereof. This book does just that.

In all languages humans frequently use linguistic combinations called phraseological units (PUs) in communicative acts. These PUs are characterized by their institutionalized fixation and in many cases by their opacity. Traditionally the work on phraseology has placed the emphasis on the total fixing of components and structures of verbal expressions. Variation in PUs is currently an uncontested fact and has been extensively studied and analyzed. In addition in the case of languages like Spanish English French spoken in many countries new creations or diatopic variants arise. While these diatopic expressions have been collected or analyzed in their territory of influence no comprehensive collection showing all the expressions and contrastive analysis to observe the similarities and differences between these diatopic creations with all their idiosyncratic and cultural references have been made so far.<br xmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.com/ns/"/>The content of this volume deals with numerous linguistic lexicographic and translational problems in the context of language variation in general as well as specifically related to diatopic variation. This volume presents a collection of papers using the theory of Functional Discourse Grammar (FDG) to analyse and explain a number of specific constructions or phenomena (external possessor contructions and binominal constructions negation modification modality polysynthesis and transparency) from different perspectives language-specific comparative and typological. Common Law in an Uncommon Courtroom : Judicial interpreting in Hong Kong

This book takes you into a common-law courtroom which is in no way similar to any other courtroom where common law is practised. This uniqueness is characterised in particular by the use of English as the trial language in a predominantly Cantonese-speaking society and by the presence of other bilinguals in court thus presenting specific challenges for the interpreters who work in it and at times rendering the interpretation service superfluous. This study inter alia problematises judges’ intervention in the court proceedings Chinese witnesses testifying in English as well as English-language trials heard by Chinese jurors. It demonstrates how the use of chuchotage proves to be inadequate and inappropriate in the Hong Kong courtroom where interpreting in an English-language trial is arguably provided to cater for the need of the linguistic majority. Aspectuality across Languages : Event construal in speech and gesture

The book provides a nuanced multimodal perspective on how people express events via certain grammatical forms of verbs in speech and certain qualities of movement in manual gestures. The volume is the outcome of an international project that involved three teams: one each from France Germany and Russia including scholars from the Netherlands and the United States. <br xmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.com/ns/"/>Aspect and gesture use are studied in three Indo-European languages i.e. French German and Russian. The book also summarizes the main points and arguments from French German and Russian works on aspect in relation to tense bringing these historical traditions together for an English-speaking reading audience. <br/>The work rekindles some fundamental theorizing about events and aspect reinvigorating it in a new light with the use of recent theorizing from cognitive linguistics and cognitive psychology as well as new research methods applied to new data from actual spoken interactive language use. It illustrates the value of researching the variably multimodal nature of communication – as well as theoretical issues in connection with thinking for speaking and mental simulation – from an empirical point of view.

Bringing together experienced classroom researchers and teacher educators from different countries where tasks are playing an influential role in language education this collected volume critically explores how TBLT research can engage with pedagogy and how TBLT pedagogy can engage with research. A defining part of the TBLT project has always been a dual concern – both with the nature and use of tasks in language teaching and with empirical research to guide and support classroom practitioners the two concerns suggesting a central and reciprocal relationship between research and pedagogy. However this relationship has at times been unbalanced and its centrality has sometimes gone by default problems which this volume aims to address. The introduction proposes criteria to improve the congruence between the research base of TBLT and the concerns and terms of reference of classroom practitioners. Using a range of methodologies the individual chapters illustrate and explore different aspects of this theme.
