The essays collected in this volume focus on the interrelated themes of mimesis, semiosis and power, each study exploring some facet of the problem of representation and its relation to strategies of power in the use of verbal and visual signs. Topics discussed include mimesis and power in Plato's Ion, rhetoric and erotics in Petrarch's thought; the limits of visual and verbal representation in Renaissance paintings of the Annunciation; binary thought and Peirce's triadic semiotics; the cinematic semiotics of Gilles Deleuze; fascist iconography in the paintings of Anselm Kiefer; oppositional strategies in postmodern fiction; visual and verbal representations of the body in mass culture; and the semiotics of violence in postmodern popular culture.

L'objectif affiché du colloque 'Le Discours aspectualisé' était d'examiner à quelles conditions on peut passer d'une conception phrastique et linguistique de l'aspect à une théorie de l'aspectualisation discursive en sémiotique. La confrontation de plusieurs disciplines et de plusieurs méthodes — linguistique générale, linguistique historique, sciences cognitives, sémiotique, entre autres — devait permettre de cerner les effets théoriques de ce changement d'objet et de dimension, et d'en mesurer, dans la mesure du possible, les répercussions épistémologiques.

This work is the intellectual biography of the greatest of American philosophers. Peirce was not only a pioneer in logic and the creator of a philosophical movement pragmatism he also proposed a phenomenological theory, quite different from that of Husserl, but equal in profundity; and long before Saussure, and in a totally different spirit, a semiotic theory whose present interest owes nothing to passing fashion and everything to its fecundity. Throughout his life Peirce wrote continually about sign and phenomenon (or phaneron). Consequently his writings must be studied chronologically if they are not to appear incomprehensible or contradictory. One of the merits of this book is to clarify Peirce's thought by analysing its development chronologically. We follow the evolution of Peirce's thought from his critique of Kantian logic and Cartesianism (Chap. I, “Leaving the Cave”: 1851-1870) to his discovery of modern logic and pragmatism (Chap. II, “The Eclipse of the Sun”: 1870-1887) and finally to a semiotic founded on a phenomenology the base of which is the logic of relations and the crowning-point scientific metaphysics (Chap. III, “The Sun Set Free”: 1887-1914). The book includes a detailed chronology, a general bibliography, and an index.

Significs is one of those (by no means exclusively) sign theoretically relevant movements which arose at the turn of the century. It established a philosophical tradition which, from its very inception, was interlaced with widely varying movements ranging, for example, from Breal's semantics to Carnap's and Neurath's logical empiricism. In this volume, an international group of well-known scholars from various disciplines undertakes a broad re-evaluation of significs and its development which promises also to yield a better knowledge of research approaches in linguistics, semiotics, philosophy, and psychology with which significs was related or vied for acceptance. Contributions deal with Lady Welby's biography and socio-cultural background, the intellectual context of the signific movement at the turn of the century and the relationships between Welby's semiotic and philosophical ideas on the one hand and those of her contemporaries (Breal, Peirce, Schiller, Vailati etc.) and followers (Ogden, Van Eeden, Mannoury etc.) on the other. Descriptions of the historiographically most important archive materials, a bibliography of publications on Lady Welby and her significs and an index of names conclude the volume.

In the course of the long debate on the nature and the classification of signs, from Boethius to Ockham, there are at least three lines of thought: the Stoic heritage, that influences Augustine, Abelard, Francis Bacon; the Aristotelian tradition, stemming from the commentaries on De Interpretatione; the discussion of the grammarians, from Priscian to the Modistae. Modern interpreters are frequently misled by the fact that the various authors regularly used the same terms. Such a homogeneous terminology, however, covers profound theoretical differences. The aim of these essays is to show that the medieval theory of signs does not represent a unique body of semiotic notions: there are diverse and frequently alternative semiotic theories. This book thus represents an attempt to encourage further research on the still unrecognized variety of the semiotic approaches offered by the medieval philosophies of language.

It has often been claimed that the aim of semiotics is to establish a general theory of systems of signification. However, as Jean-Claude Coquet notes in a recent collection of essays, what distinguishes one school of semiotics from another is the initial definition given of sign. If, for certain semioticians, the sign is first of all an observable phenomenon, for the Paris School it is first of all a construct and this point of departure has crucial theoretical and practical consequences. The essays appearing in these two volumes are representative of recent work carried out by members of this semiotic school. Essays in Volume I study problems more closely related to theoretical issues, while Volume II focuses more specifically on various fields of application.

A semiotic analysis is made of the six major plays by Eugene O'Neill and an attempt is made to yield a systematic analysis towards humanistic interpretations of texts. Theoretical interpretations are enriched with discussions of the plays. Technical matters such as the segmentation of the text are specified in appendices. Six semiotic dimensions have been studied: motifs, theatrical semiotic systems, their use in communicational functions, role function of the dramatis personae, their levels of awareness, and aristotelian divisions.

Une phénoménologie de la quotidienneté révèle des moments de fracture esthétique. L'interruption du sublime engendre des instants d'allégresse et de bonheur, et confirme notre sentiment d'existence. L'aisthèsis quotidienne transcende de loin l'eidétique du regard et de la lumière; elle n'est comblée que par la synesthésie du goût et du toucher instaurant la fusion et la jonction. Le sublime du quotidien, tributaire de l'esthétique de Kant et de la sémiotique de Greimas est conçu comme l'éloge de la passion du beau. L'auteur réfléchit sur la possibilité d'une biographie située entièrement dans la quotidienneté.

Translated by Paul Perron Maupassant's short story, “Two Friends”, is examined in order to test methodological tools and to hone them for their application in the analysis of narrative discourse, starting from the oral tale (Propp) and ending with the written tale instituted as literary genre. Complex procedures of textual production are identified: among which entire sequences as well as the “evenemential” level of narrative fade away in favor of its cognitive dimension. This semiotic investigation is accompanied by a challenge to certain conventions of literary criticism: dialogue, the locus of Realist stereotypes, appears laden with paradoxical truths; the description of nature, inherited from the Romantics, bristles with narrative intent, and entire sections of a valorized figurative universe unfold before us. Thematic readings are linked up with semantic analysis: the figure of Water exerts its profound fascination. A Christian symbolics is uncovered which traverses the text and invites us to read it as a new Gospel Parable. New readings complement older ones and remain as so many suspended possibilities. The tale appears somewhat as a sonnet, that is to say as a “fixed-form” genre, where the closure of the text would be a necessary condition for transcending it.

Une analyse systématique et détaillée des fines stratégies du secret et du désir de savoir à l’œvre entre les protagonistes de A la recherche du temps perdu, conduite à la lumière de la théorie sémiotique, et qui dévoile, à travers le texte de Proust, la présence implicite d’une théorie et d’une esthétique de la connaissance. La perspective adoptée, qui conduit à récuser toute coupure radicale entre discours littéraire et discours scientifique, apporte une contribution originale à la réflexion sure les problèmes généraux de l’épistémologie des discours.

Le présent ouvrage est la première introduction française à une lecture systématique de Peirce.

Par une reconstruction chronologique qui tente à supprimer quelques-uns des pseudo-problèmes que l’édition thématique des écrits de Peirce ont soulevés, cet ouvrage tente à donner une idée aussi exacte et complète que possible de la pensée de l’un des philosophes le plus original et universel de l’Amérique.

Why was Leibniz so deeply interested in signs and language? What role does this interest play in his philosophical system? In the essays here collected, Marcello Dascal attempts to tackle these questions from different angles. They bring to light aspects of Leibniz’s work on these and related issues which have been so far neglected. As a rule they take as their starting point Leibniz's early writings (some unpublished, some only available in Latin) on characters and cognition, on definition, on truth, on memory, on grammar, on the specific problems of religious discourse, and so on. An effort has been made to relate the views expressed in these writings both to Leibniz’ more mature views, and to the conceptions prevailing in his time, as well as in preceding and following periods. The common thread running through all the essays is to what extent language and signs, in their most varied forms, are related to cognitive processes, according to Leibniz and his contemporaries.

n recent years, the post structuralist theories seem to have created a split in theatrological research. But, as André Helbo analyses in this book , a dialectic theory of the semiotic and the symbolic exchange bring to light a specific paradigm. From his wide experience as a semiotician and a theatrologist, the author has developed an analysis for the theory of spectacle. Focusing his study on a critical theory of the performing arts, and examining the fundamental controversies, he then offers new perspectives and new instruments of analysis: the social aspects, readability/visibility, coherence, the spectacle contract.

Le présent volume réunit les contributions d’un colloque sur la pensée sémiotique et linguistique des Idéologues qui s’est tenu à Berlin du 3 au 5 octobre 1983. Ce recueil d’articles fait suite à un fascicule de la revue Histoire Epistémologie Langage qui était consacré au même sujet et dont il complète et amplifie les perspectives en ce qui concerne la portée européenne de la discussion. Le volume manifeste l’intérêt que beaucoup d’entre nous portent, surtout dans les sciences du langage, à ces philosophes longtemps négligés par l’histoire de la pensée.

La sémiotique plastique refuse la confusion du visible et du dicible. Tout ce qui fait sens peut être soumis à l’analyse: la saturation d’un rouge, le parallélisme ou le croisement de deux lignes ou encore le rappel d’un même agencement de formes et de volumes dan un espace bâti. Les sept études concrètes ici rassemblées portent sur des œuvres aussi différentes qu’une photographie d’Edouard Boubat, une bande dessinée de Benjamin Rabier, deux publicités (‘News’, ‘Urgo’), un tableau de Kandinsky, une maison conçue par l’architecte Georges Baines, les essais critiques et les dessins de Roland Barthes. Un phénomène sémiotique commun les parcourt, qui justifie l’unité de leur approche: c’est le couplage de catégories du signifiant visuel – opposant les couleurs, les formes ou les valeurs – avec certaines catégories conceptuelles, telles que nature/culture, identité/altérité, vie/mort, etc. La compréhesion de ce principe porteur de signification conduit au rapprochement des problématiques esthétique, anthropologique et sémiotique de l’image et de l’œuvre d’art. Elle implique le rejet de tout cloisonnement et de toute hiérarchie a priori des arts et des langages.

This monograph is about the semiotics of lexical signs, and is of particular interest for historical linguists, in particular those interested in etymology. Specialists in linguistic change have long noticed that certain classes of words seem to be in part exempt from regular patterns of sound change, or perhaps more likely to undergo unusual analogical shifts. The problem is far worse for the etymologist, since the lexicon of every language contains some hundreds of semiotically problematic vocables which must, if the etymological dictionaries are ever to be completed, be explained somehow. Always been struck by the sheer capriciousness of etymologies in which some sort of unusual form-meaning relations are involved, the author, with the help of C.S. Peirce, provides answers to crucial questions in his search to make sense of those capricious etymologies.

This is the facsimile 1911 reprint of Victoria Lady Welby’s very last publication Significs and Language. The Articulate form of our Expressive and Interpretative resources. This volume also includes two major essays from the author’s hands, ‘Meaning and Metaphor’ (reprinted from The Monist 3:4, 1893), and ‘Sense, Meaning and Interpretation’ (reprinted from Mind 5:17 and 18, 1896), and a selection of several noteworthy and unpublished essays. In the introduction to this volume the editor H. Walter Schmitz exemplifies how Lady Welby developed her significs in discussion and cooperation with numerous highly divergent scientists and scholars of her times; how her ideas influenced other scholars in Europe and the US; and how significs sank to near oblivion and was finally recovered.

The general objective of this volume is to present and discuss different modes of existence in women’s texts and feminist identity in political and poetic discourse on the one hand, and to analyze the factors which determine differing relationships between women and society, and which result in specific forms of identity on the other. The essays in this volume explore language, gender, mass media, sexuality, class and social change, women’s identity as Blacks and in the Third World as well as the nature of domination, feminine criticism and female creativity. The volume opens with a challenging question by the feminist poet Adrienne Rich, ‘Who is We?’

This volume contains a facsimile reprint of the 1883 Boston edition of Studies in Logic by Members of the Johns Hopkins University, edited by Charles S. Peirce. In relation to this work there are three mutually related aspects of Peirce’s thought which deserve to be particularly emphasized: the community structure of science as propagated and practiced by Peirce; his consideration of the fundamental relationship between logic and semiotics; and his emphatic plea for a historisation of science and, hence, of semiotics. Peirce’s Studies in Logic is preceded in this volume by a portrait of Peirce as scientist, mathematician, historian, logician and philosopher by Max. H. Fisch, and a history of semiotics and Charles S. Peirce by Achim Eschbach.

According to the traditional view, meaning presents itself under the form of some kind of identity. To give the meaning of a sentence amounts to being capable of producing some substitute based on the identity of the terms of the sentence. Is then the meaning of a book, or of any text, the capacity of rewriting it? Instead of retaining a double-standard theory of meaning, one for sentences and another for texts, that would allow for an ad hoc gap, the author provides a unified conception, called the question view of language he has developed, known as problematology. He pursues a systematic analysis of questioning in literature and shows how questioning makes the understanding process possible.

In "What is Meaning" (1903) the author elaborates on the fundamental tenets of her theory of sign, to which she gave the overall term ‘significs’. One of the main obstacles to an adequate theory of meaning, in Lady Welby’s opinion, is the unfounded assumption of fixed sign meaning. "There is, strictly speaking, no such thing as the Sense of a word, but only the sense in which it is used – the circumstances, state of mind, reference, ‘universe of discourse’ belonging to it. The Meaning of a word is the intent which it is desired to convey – the intention of the user. The Significance is always manifold, and intensifies its sense as well as its meaning, by expressing its importance, its appeal to us, its moment for us, its emotional force, its ideal value, its moral aspect, its universal or at least social range."
This facsimile of the 1903 edition of "What is Meaning" is accompanied by an essay on "Significs as a Fundamental Science" by Achim Eschbach, and "A Concise History of Significs" by G. Mannoury.

This study represents a contribution to the theory of meaning in natural language. It proposes a semantic theory containing a set of regular relational principles. These principles enable semantic theory to describe connections from the lexical reading of a word to its figurative contextual reading, from one variant reading of a polysemous lexical item to another, from the idiomatic to its literal reading or to the literal reading(s) of one or more of its component lexical items. Semiotic theory provides a foundation by supplying principles defining motivated expression-content relations for signs generally. The author argues that regular semantic relational principles must dervive from such semiotic principles, to ensures the psychological reality and generality of the semantic principles.

The aim of this book is to show the way forward to a coherent view of language in which the achievement of the formalist paradigm is strengthened to the extent that its claims are weakened. A formal theory such as generative grammar is a special theory which is to be subsumed in a general theory of linguistic communication that also includes pragmatics. The tension between the psycho-formalist and the socio-functional views could be resolved in a synthesis whereby both the psychological and social natures of language are fully acknowledged. Semantics and pragmatics, representing these two natures in the study of meaning, have distinct goals, which can be defined more clearly and pursued more effectively to the extent that both their distinctness and their interdependence are recognized.
