Abstract

SUMMARYIn seeking to comprehend language, including language change, linguists need a framework. A century and a half of phonological study has provided such a framework, as evident especially in Trubetzkoy's Principles of Phonology. Change in phonological systems is clarified by attention to its generalizations. Parallel work in syntax, leading to important generalizations with reference to syntactic framework, has provided means for similar understanding of syntactic change in the past decades. Examples of syntactic change are cited, as illustrations, such as changes in the comparison of inequality, in reflexivi-zation, in complement structures. Data on these have been provided by typological studies. Syntactic typology has in this way furnished important information for identifying, describing and explaining changing syntactic structures.RÉSUMÉLe linguiste cherchant à comprendre le langage, y compris le changement langagier, a besoin d'un point de référence.
