Abstract

SUMMARYThe contribution of Constantin François Volney (1757-1820) to Semitic Studies has been largely ignored to the present day. Despite its shortcomings, his analysis of the morphological structure of the root in Arabic and Hebrew is much more elaborate than that of his predecessors. It has subsequently been given definitive treatment by Franz Bopp. This rupture of a long, almost unchanging, tradition was due to his first-hand acquaintance with the spoken language and, most importantly, to his method based on the principles of the Idéologie and his awareness of the functional pertinency and the social dimension of language in general.RÉSUMÉLa contribution de Constantin François Volney (1757-1820) aux études sémitiques est plus que négliguée.
