Although the Institution which was widely used throughout Europe as a textbook by the Jésuites, was a monolingual grammar, and as such widely criticized in Portugal since the 17th century, its first edition, published in Lisbon, contains numerous commentaries on Portuguese, in particular in the chapter on verbal morphology, where Alvares postulates seven moods, assigning Latin equivalences to each of them. Bento Pereira, whose Arte was designed in the first place as a teaching tool of Portuguese for foreign missionaries and merchants, and, in the second place, as a normative grammar for native speakers of Portuguese, takes over the bulk of Alvares' argument, except that now the Latin forms serve as translations of the Portuguese ones. The paper investigates the origins of Alvares' categories of mood, their definitions as well as their assigments to Latin and especially the Portuguese forms. Jahrhun-derts. %U https://www.jbe-platform.com/content/journals/10.1075/hl.20.2-3.03sch
