Abstract

SUMMARYThe paper analyzes six French grammars published in Spain in the first half of the 18th century. These pedagogical works, which until now haven not received the attention of scholars, are studied in the present paper in the following manner, one by one. First, biographical information on the authors is provided. Then the full titles of the works in question are cited. They are subsequently made the subject of a few comments on their front matter, then their treatment of phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax is succinctly analyzed in the context of French pedagogical grammars of the period and with reference to their sources. Following this, particular attention is paid to their pedagogical applications. In the conclusion the changes that French pedagogical grammar underwent during the first half of the 18th century is emphasized. Their approach became more specifically contrastive. In contrast to the grammar that was developing in France during the same period, those in Spain did not attain the formative function but remained attached to purely practical goals.RÉSUMÉNous analysons dans cet article six grammaires françaises éditées en Espagne dans la première moitié du XVIIIe siècle.
