Abstract

SUMMARYThis paper deals with the reflections of August Friedrich Pott (1802-1887), one of the representatives of German general linguistics in the 19th century, on some linguistic facts which can be counted among the expressive means of language, i.e., interjections, onomatopoeic words, phonetic processes relating to phonosymbolism, and reduplication. The author notes that Pott's interest in this subject becomes part of his general interest in examining the 'internal aspect' of language, in other words, that it becomes part of an outline of a semantic theory maintaining — in accordance with the Humboldtian line of thought — the role of mediation played by language in experience. It is, in fact, an interest in linguistic forms in which a reduction of the gap between 'subjectivity' and 'objectivity' that characterize all facts of language, i.e., an interest in linguistic forms whose nature seems to motivate in some measure the link between 'internal' and 'external' aspect, and in which a certain degree of immediacy of phonetic features obscures the role of mediation played by language in the intuition of the world.
