This ideological context, which I maintain is critical for the understanding of the full implications of Menéndez Pidal's linguistic approach, has been assumed by traditional historiography to be outside the scope of linguistics. It is claimed here that the Spanish philologist's scholarly accomplishments, justly praised by his disciples and hispanists in general, did not occur in a social vacuum, but were instead well entrenched in a specific intellectual, social, and historical context. Menéndez Pidal lived and worked in a period in which Spain, like other 19th-century liberal democracies, was building its identity as a nation-state. In this period, the construction of the Spanish nation was threatened by centrifugal forces (e.g., the articulation of Basque, Catalan, and Galician nationalisms) that challenged Spain's unitary political and cultural identity. It is precisely against the backdrop of this socio-political landscape that Menéndez Pidal's use of the neogrammarian model of convergence in the Manual, his scrupulous philological examination of old documents in Origenes is interpreted — which, for him, offered proof of Castile's destiny as the leading force in the history of Spain, including his integrative reworking of the phonetic law converting it into a means by which to perceive the unity underlying dialectal variation.RÉSUMÉLa thèse principale de cet article est qué l'approche théoriqué de l'histoire du langage dévelopée par le philologue espagnol Ramón Menéndez-Pilal (1869-1968) dans son Manual [elemental] de gramática histórica espanola (première édition publiée en 1904) et dans Origenes del espanol (première édition publiée en 1926), ne reflète pas seulement une interprétation très originale des théories linguistiques disponibles et un besoin d'améliorer leur pouvoir explicatif. Le développement de sa théorie doit être placé dans le contexte idéologiqué où elle est apparue. Selon l'historiographie traditionelle, ce contexte idéologique, central á la compréhension des conséquences de l'approche linguistiqué de Menéndez-Pilal, se trouve en dehors du champ de la linguistique. Cet article démontre qué les travaux linguistiques et scientifiques du philologue espagnol, loués á juste titre par ses disciples et par les his-panistes en général, n'existaient pas dans un vide social, mais se trouvaient au contraire bien implantés dans un contexte intellectuel, social et historiqué particulier. Menéndez-Pidal a vécu et travaillé á l'époqué où l'Espagne, comme d'autres démocraties libérales du XIXe siècle, était en train de construire son identité d'état-nation. Pendant cette période, la construction de la nation espagnole était menacée par des forces centrifuges, telles qué la formulation des nationalismes basque, catalan et galicien, mettant en question l'identité culturelle et politiqué unificatrice de l'Espagne. C'est précisément dans le cadre de ce paysage socio-politiqué qu'il convient d'interpréter l'utilisation par Menén-dez-Pidal d'un modèle néo-grammairien de convergence dans le Manual, son examen philologiqué scrupuleux de documents anciens dans Ongenes (prouvant selon lui qué la Castille était destinée á être la force motrice de l'histoire de l'Espagne) et sa transformation de la loi phonétiqué en un moyen par lequel percevoir l'unité sous des variations dialectales superficielles.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGHauptthese dieses Aufsatzes ist die Auffassung, da ßder sprachgeschicht-lich-theoretische Ansatz des spanischen Philologen Ramon Menéndez Pidal (1869-1968), wie er ihn in seinem Manual [elemental] de gramática historica espanola (Erstauflage 1904) und in seinem Ongenes del espanol (Erstauflage 1925) entwickelte, nicht nur als Resultat einer höchst originellen Interpretation der ihm zugänglichen linguistischen Theorien und des Bedùrfnisses, diese in ihrer explanatorischen Kraft zu verbessem, zu sehen ist, sondern auch als ein Zusammenspiel zwischen dieser Theorie und dem ideologischen Kontext, aus dem er hervorging. Dieser ideologische Kontext, den der Autor als unent-behrlich für ein volles Verständnis von Menéndez Pidals linguistische Methode erachtet, wird von der tradtionellen Historiographie als außerhalb der Linguis-tik liegend angesehen. Im vorliegenden Aufsatz wird dagegen die Behauptung aufgestellt, daB die linguistisch-wissenschaftlichen Errungenschaften des spanischen Philologen, zurecht gelobt von seinen Schülern und Hispanisten all-gemein, nicht in einem sozialen Vakuum erfolgt seien, sondern daB sie stattdessen in einem spezifischen intellektuellen, sozialen und historischen Kontext fest verankert waren. Menéndez Pidal lebte und wirkte in einer Zeit, in der Spanien, wie andere liberale Demokratien des 19. Jahrhunderts, seine Identitát als Nationalstaat formte. In dieser Zeit wurde der Aufbau der spanischen Nation durch Zentrifugalkräfte (etwa die Artikulation baskischer, katalanischer und galizischer Nationalismen) bedroht, welche Spaniens einheitliche politische und kulturelle Identitát herausforderten. Genau vor diesem Hintergrund einer sozio-politischen Landschaft wird im vorliegenden Artikel Menéndez Pidals Verwendung des junggrammatischen Models der Konvergenz in seinem Manual, seine gewissenhafte philologische Analyse alter Dokumente in Orige-nes — die für ihn die Bestimmung Kastiliens als führende Kraft innerhalb der spanischen Geschichte bewies — und seine integrative Neufassung der Laut-gesetze untersucht, die er zu einem Beobachtungsmittel der unter oberflách-licher dialektalischen Variation liegende Einheit machte.", }
