Abstract

Computing needs a coherent and shared means of graphic expression, to describe what it is doing and how it is doing it, to the lay public, the industry's non-professional designers and to computer scientists. This will promote effective information display on computer equipment while fostering a better understanding for all of computing's aims and methods. Examples are given of areas of computing which are clear candidates for graphic innovation and some form of standardisation. Some obstacles to this are considered.
