Abstract

This paper presents an overview of a cognitive modeling approach to the study of simultaneous interpretation. It discusses current work in adapting an established cognitive modeling system to permit study of lower-level cognition in interpretation. A sketch is given of the basic cognitive architecture of the system as used in modeling comprehension. The integration of the comprehension component with other tasks is explored, and a unified framework for studying the overall interpretation task is outlined. Mention is made of the system's potential for investigating various aspects of interpretation performance, and possible areas of focus for future research are described.
