Abstract
This paper deals with Japanese students who enroll in a postgraduate program at an Australian university. Usingthe language management model, I analyse the types of difficulties they experience in the English academic context in termsof deviations from the norm, and then examine the various types of adjustment processes through which they develop theirEnglish academic competence.
