Abstract

Gaston Gross: a case of reverse constructions: donner et recevoir.Besides the common use of the verbs donner (to give) and recevoir (to receive) in their concrete meaning, these two verbs may take nominal predicates such as in the sentencesBob gave his agreement to Jo's leavingJo received Bob's agreement for leavingThere, complex relations link the subjects and objects of both verbs. The author classifies various types of analogous constructions according to the verbal nouns found in direct object positions. Three main types are defined and, in one case, a relation (a Harrisian type of transformation) is shown to hold between donner and recevoir.
