Management of Interpretation Services in the United Nations SystemIn June 1986 the Joint Inspection Unit of the United Nations published its report on the administration of interpretation services in the United Nations system (document JIU/REP/86/5). The report offers a general overview of the interpreting services, with attention to costs and training. More detailed examination of the problem of recruitment and preparation of interpreters, comparative costs of regular versus free-lance interpreters, the organization of conference calendars, videoconferencing, and computer-assisted management follows. The report ends with a summary of conclusions and recommendations. Although the complete text of the report already exists in the languages of the UN, we are publishing an Esperanto translation of the introductory sections and of the chapter on videoconferencing because they will be particularly interesting to our readers who use that language. The translator is Charles Power.
