Abstract
Transcreation has achieved a prominent place in professional practice and research. Nevertheless, there is still a debate surrounding its nature, definition, and characteristics. This study proposes a categorization of transcreation as a member within the category of “text production” based on a review of the theoretical background of research on transcreation (including its key features and its relationship with translation). This categorization is founded on the prototypes in linguistics theory by Taylor (1995). As such, a continuum of text production is proposed in which writing, transcreation and translation co-exist as members of the category with varying degrees of dependence on a source text. This theoretical contribution opens the door to new lines of empirical and theoretical research.
