Getting there: An assessment of London Transport's endeavour to improve bus passenger information literature for central London, 1979-1985
Author(s): Mike Horne, Jonathan Roberts and Douglas Rosepp.: 87–110 (24)More LessThis the second part of a paper discussing the problems of putting across information about bus travel in London. Part 1, published in ID J 5/1, described the basic needs of bus users and the development of a new bus map for central London. In Part 2, reactions to the new map are described and the new design is analysed, with an examination of cartographic problems such as complex routeing, road naming, railway station location and one-way streets.

On the re-organisation of form-filling behaviour in an electronic medium
Author(s): David M. Frohlichpp.: 111–128 (18)More LessThis paper explores the potential f or computerising written transactions between individuals and organisations. It reports a study of electronic form-filling on a computer system called the Forms Helper, which replicates a study of paper form-filling by Frohlich (1986). Data from observational notes, verbal protocols, completed forms and (additionally) interaction logs are combined in an analysis of the reading and routing activities of subjects on the Forms Helper. A modification of Frohlich’s (1986) paper form-filling principles is suggested as a basis for understanding the observed organisation of electronic form-filling behaviour. The implications of the findings for electronic from design are discussed.

From bureaucratic language to instructional texts: How to design an effective problem-solving tool for citizens
Author(s): Michaël F. Steehouder and Carel Jansenpp.: 129–139 (11)More LessThis paper proposes that bureaucratic texts (texts which explain government schemes and regulations) should benefit from principles developed for instructional text. Some principles f or instructional bureaucratic texts are proposed, and a design procedure is suggested that aims to determine the most efficient ordering of information.

Pictures with words: A critique of Alain-Marie Bassy's approach
Author(s): Jeremy Mulveypp.: 141–158 (18)More LessThis paper addresses the relationship of pictures and words in illustrated books and newspapers. The author introduces and discusses Roland Barthes' distinction between anchor and relay relationships, and a further development of this distinction by Alain-Marie Bassy. In an anchor relationship, the interpretation of an illustration is anchored to one of its possible meanings by a caption or other linguistic explanation. In a relay relationship, words and pictures are mutually reliant, as in a comic strip. The author suggests that 'defining the relationships between picture and text in this way, has implications for layout.'

Designing in fives
Author(s): Kathy Carter and Neil Wisemanpp.: 159–165 (7)More LessThis paper discusses a computer-assisted design system that makes use of multiple windowing, and its implementation f or typeface design. The system assigns each of five levels in the design task to a separate window, and allows the effect of changes made at any level to be seen in the other windows. The system is designed to be acceptable to designers and to avoid inhibiting their creativity.
