Expectations of users of conference interpretation
Author(s): Peter Moserpp.: 145–178 (34)More LessIn the present study the quality of interpretation services is measured against the judgements, needs and expectations of users of that service. Using the methods of empirical social sciences research, it brings together the evaluations produced by a wide range of users and attempts to interpret their significance. User responses were obtained in the context in which the respondents were making use of the interpretation services and the data has been analysed against that background. In addition to the situational context, and to the extent that the empirical data permits, account has also been taken of the degree to which respondents' individual characteristics may have influenced their responses to or expectations of interpreter performance. A detailed propositional analysis of interpreters' output, including a categorization of text-type, combined with experimental data from hemispheric preference research of interpreters on task revealed that text structure influenced hemispheric preference.

Machine interpretation of bilingual dialogue

It is a report on one project to design the discourse module for such a voice-to-voice machine translation (MT) system known as the Interpreting Telephone. The theoretical discourse framework that underlies the proposed dialogue manager supports the job of extracting and collecting information from the context, and facilitating human-machine language interaction in a multi-user environment. Empirical support for the dialogue theory and the implementation described herein, comes from an observational study of one human interpreter engaged in a three-way, bilingual telephone conversation. We begin with a brief description of the interpreting telephone research endeavor, then examine the discourse requirements of such a language-processing system, and finally, report on the application of the discourse processing framework to this voice-to-voice machine translation task.

Modeling SI: A cognitive approach

It discusses current work in adapting an established cognitive modeling system to permit study of lower-level cognition in interpretation. A sketch is given of the basic cognitive architecture of the system as used in modeling comprehension. The integration of the comprehension component with other tasks is explored, and a unified framework for studying the overall interpretation task is outlined. Mention is made of the system's potential for investigating various aspects of interpretation performance, and possible areas of focus for future research are described.
