Terminology project management
Author(s): Ursula Fähndrichpp.: 225–260 (36)More LessThis article deals systematically with the author’s practical experience of organising and carrying out terminology projects and attempts to relate them to project management theory. It is intended to serve as a guide of sorts for terminologists confronted with the task of managing a terminology project. The first section defines what terminology projects are, what sets them apart from other types of project, what forms they can take and how these forms are prioritised within the project portfolio, as well as proposing a possible model to describe the various phases of a project. Separate sections are then devoted to each of the phases, namely Acquisition, Needs Analysis and Offering, Planning, Implementation and Controlling, Handover and Completion, and Follow-up.

Language planning with respect to English into China
Author(s): Zuo Xiulanpp.: 283–292 (10)More LessNowadays a more and more tightly integrated world generally favors the spread of English. Academics all over the world are concerned about the problem of English infiltration and anxious about its consequences, for lexical borrowing is said to be the first sign of language shift and extinction. In China such sentiments and fears are usually demonstrated in language planning programs. The Chinese language has a tradition of purism due to its long history. This paper focuses on the tradition of linguistic purism in lexical borrowing in the Chinese language as well as language planning and language policy towards the infiltration of English words into the Chinese language.

Language development and scientific development: A case study of physics terminology creation in Persian
Author(s): Abolfazl Zarnikhipp.: 293–309 (17)More LessThe article deals with the role of terminology activities in scientific progress. It seems language development is the first step to achieving development. One way of developing a language is to understand subtleties of developed languages. As physics in Iran is an established course, its terminologies have been studied diachronically, over a period of 150 years, to know whether its language is well developed. To measure language evolution some criteria are suggested: terminologization, increasing of precision, standardization, reducing of loan-words and increasing of scientific concepts in native language. The criteria are applied to the data compiled from three distinct periods of the history of the language of physics in Iran. Today’s terminologies represent an improvement in the language of physics, compared with old word-formations. This means that physics has satisfied the precondition of development.
