Linguistic attitudes toward the tuteo and voseo in Montevideo, Uruguay
Author(s): Joseph R. Weyerspp.: 175–198 (24)More LessThis study reports on 431 surveys that were used to determine speakers’ attitudes toward the tuteo and voseo in Montevideo. It examines speakers’ attitudes toward: the use of tú; the use of vos in [+D] domains; speakers’ recognition of V–V, T–V, and T–T combinations; ti and vos in prepositional phrases; and the dialect of Montevideo. All speakers express positive attitudes toward the tuteo, although those under 40 do not use it. Younger speakers show a preference for V–V combinations and a predilection for vos as a prepositional object. The youngest subjects expressed the most positive attitude toward the Montevidean dialect. Although recent research points to an increasing use of the voseo in Montevideo (Steffen 2010, Weyers 2009, Bertolotti and Coll 2006), the generally favorable attitudes expressed toward the tuteo suggest an affinity toward the Montevideo norm, regardless of actual usage or potential future changes.

Funciones socio-discursivas de las alternancias de gallego y español en la realización bilingüe de cotilleo

Tras reseñar estudios sobre este género discursivo procedentes de distintas disciplinas, repaso la historia del contacto gallego/español en Galicia y analizo tres fragmentos de cotilleo en una conversación “natural”, que incluyen alternancias en estas lenguas. En mis conclusiones resalto las funciones discursivas y sociolingüísticas que desempeñan estos usos bilingües: su papel en la estructuración del discurso y en el refuerzo de los vínculos interpersonales entre las participantes a través de su cooperación en la construcción de un estilo bilingüe de cotilleo. En este estilo, el uso de gallego tiende a centrarse en las zonas centrales del discurso, en las que se reconstruyen los hechos, actuando como recurso dramatizador y de evaluación implícita; en cambio, el español tiende a localizarse en las zonas periféricas del discurso, es decir, en la aportación inicial de datos de contextualización, contribuyendo a realzar la función dramatizadora del gallego, así como en la conclusión, en la que los comportamientos representados son evaluados explícitamente desde una perspectiva moral.

¿Qué diciendo nomás?: Tracing the sources of the Andean Spanish gerund

Lipskipp.: 227–260 (34)More LessIn Quechua-dominant Spanish interlanguage in the Andean region the gerund is frequently found instead of finite verb forms typical of monolingual Spanish. Using data collected among Quichua-Spanish bilinguals in northern Ecuador, this study challenges claims that direct transfer of the Quichua subordinator -s(h)pa — often called a “gerund” — is the immediate source of the Andean Spanish gerund. Quichua-dominant bilinguals produce Spanish gerunds mostly in subordinate clauses, reflecting the general pattern of Quechua. However, in a Quichua-to-Spanish translation task, -shpa was most frequently translated as a gerund by school children who had received Quichua language classes, and least frequently by traditional Quichua-dominant speakers. An examination of historical documents suggests that the gerund was used in Spanish foreigner talk directed at indigenous speakers. The ultimate source of the -s(h)pa = Spanish gerund equation is traced to 16th and 17th century Quechua grammars written in the Latinate tradition, and to Spanish priests’ and missionaries’ (mis)appropriation of this grammatical interpretation in their interaction with indigenous speakers in the Andean zone.

Variación sociosituacional de la colocación del sujeto pronominal en textos conversacionales

En este trabajo nos proponemos desarrollar su análisis incorporando las propiedades cognitivas que caracterizan a esa variación como la prominencia cognitiva y la informatividad textual. Las variantes preverbal y posverbal en géneros conversacionales del Corpus Conversacional del Español de Canarias, coaparecen con factores sociales, situacionales y comunicativos tales como la función que adopta el hablante en la interacción (transaccional o interpersonal) y el sexo/género. Esto da lugar a la construcción de distintos estilos comunicativos basados en las dimensiones graduales de la objetividad-subjetividad que se distribuyen de forma desigual entre tales categorías.

Responding and Clarifying: An analysis of pues as a sequential marker in Mexican Spanish talk-in-interactions
Author(s): Ariel Vázquez Carranzapp.: 284–309 (26)More LessThis paper utilises the methodology of Conversation Analysis (CA hereafter) to report on the Spanish particle pues in Mexican Spanish talk. Two general sequential contexts are examined: 1) pues-prefacing in the second pair-part of an adjacency pair, i.e., in the second pair-part of an assessment sequence and in response to questions; and 2) turn-final pues and pues at the end of a turn-constructional unit. The analysis of assessment sequences shows that pues is used to treat the previous assessment as obvious and index epistemic independence; in addition, pues can be one of the elements used to formulate a delicate disagreement. In response to questions, pues either signals unstraightforwardness in answering or indicates that the answer is obvious which challenges the relevance of the question. Similarly, pues, in response to challenges, prefaces the obvious actions to fulfil the request, making the response a riposte. Turn-final pues and pues at the end of the turn constructional unit mark repair after interactional trouble. Finally, in a news delivery sequence, sí pues treats the previous talk as not news for the recipient.
