Evidence in the Spanish language press of linguistic borrowings of computer and Internet-related terms
Author(s): Regina Morinpp.: 161–179 (19)More LessWith the rise of the Internet, English has become a source of borrowing of computer terms in many languages, including Spanish. Many of these borrowings are rapidly making their way into the Spanish language press. A survey of newspapers from eight Latin American countries yielded a total of 231 lexical borrowings of different types, all related to broad fields, such as software, hardware, data, and Internet-related terms. These borrowings can be classified as loanwords, calques of various kinds, including loan translations and semantic extensions, and loanblends. Many have already appeared in monolingual Spanish dictionaries, such as the Diccionario de la Real Academia, and in a number of dictionaries of Hispanic Anglicisms.

Who is more Hispanic?: The co-construction of identities in a U.S. Hispanic political debate

Grahampp.: 181–213 (33)More LessThis study examines the co-construction of identities, and the pragmatic strategies used by two interlocutors in a U.S. Hispanic political debate, conducted in Spanish, to construct those identities and align with the viewers. The framework used for analysis is informed by the notion of political cognition (van Dijk 2002; Pavlenko and Blackledge 2004), as well as by the concept of alignment (Goffman 1983; Linell 1994; Koike 2003). Among the identities co-constructed by the participants were self- and other-constructed identities. The linguistic strategies used for identity negotiation included deictic markers, speech styles and, especially, pragmatic implicatures. The analysis illustrates the role of political cognition and alignment strategies in the debate context according to the candidates’ perceptions of their audience, which can be seen as a reflection of the Texas Hispanic population today.

Funciones pragmáticas de Eso es y Efectivamente en español peninsular
Author(s): María José García Vizcaínopp.: 215–237 (23)More LessEl objetivo del presente trabajo consiste en analizar las funciones pragmáticas de los marcadores Eso es y Efectivamente en español peninsular distinguiendo las funciones relacionadas con los fenómenos de cortesía verbal de otras funciones conectadas con otros ámbitos de la interacción social. El marco teórico que se utiliza es el modelo de manejo de las relaciones sociales de Spencer-Oatey (2000) que aúna tanto los aspectos personales relacionados con el concepto de imagen como las perspectivas sociales de los participantes. El corpus de datos utilizado es el Corpus Oral de Referencia del Español Contemporáneo que recoge una amplia variedad de tipologías textuales orales. Los resultados obtenidos indican que estos marcadores funcionan en tres dominios distintos de la interacción social: el ilocutivo, relacionado con los fenómenos de cortesía verbal, el de estructura del discurso y el de participación de los hablantes en el intercambio comunicativo.

Language shift and maintenance among the children of immigrants in the U.S.: Evidence in the Census for Spanish speakers and other language minorities

Villa and Alberto Dávilapp.: 239–254 (16)More LessFor over thirty years, research on Spanish in the U.S. has demonstrated an inexorable loss of the language among Spanish speaking populations. This study shows, however, that analyses of 1980, 1990, and 2000 U.S. Census data, using an innovative approach known as a synthetic cohort analysis, reveal a high degree of transmission of Spanish from first generation to second generation speakers. For the purpose of tracking reported language use of individuals starting at ages 5–7 and ending at ages 15–17, data from the Integrated Public Microdata Series are used here to create two simulated longitudinal samples of Spanish speakers over a ten-year period. English language acquisition is also examined, and the results indicate that second generation speakers are bilingual, with a high degree of control of both Spanish and English.

Las madres de la Plaza de Mayo: Prensa, ideología y resistencia

El objetivo de este estudio es comprender las construcciones y transformaciones lingüísticas que se llevaron a cabo en los encabezados del periódico argentino el Clarín durante 1981–1984, con el fin de entender las diferentes imágenes que asumen Las Madres de Plaza de Mayo. Los resultados señalan un interesante patrón discursivo en el cual tanto los eventos nacionales como internacionales juegan un rol determinante en los agentes que se utilizan para cubrir las noticias de la Plaza de Mayo. Además el discurso que se emplea en estos cuatro años pone en manifiesto la represión del régimen militar y la transición a la democracia, mostrando el período de auge y declino de las Madres de Plaza de Mayo con respecto a su militancia y resistencia política.
