Author(s): Nele Van Den Driessche and Renata EnghelsAvailable online: 24 March 2025More LessAbstractThis article investigates the construction with es que (‘it is that’) in contemporary Madrilenian Spanish youth language. Apart from the analysis by Fuentes Rodríguez (1997; 2015), this fixed, almost grammaticalized, pattern has not received sufficient attention of scholars. The present study wants to uncover the full range of functions that the construction with es que can assume, by zooming in on its productive use in teenage talk. Based on a representative sample collected from the CORMA corpus (Corpus Oral de Madrid), the analysis argues that it constitutes a pragmatic marker, i.e. a multifunctional element with a procedural meaning whose concrete interpretation is negotiated by the context. It is shown that the linguistic item shares functions not only with other pragmatic markers, but also with the constructions of insubordination and dislocation.

« Quiconque le peut doit chercher à ouvrir en quelque sorte une fenêtre du côté de l’Italie » : Les écrits « italiens » de Kristoffer Nyrop
Author(s): Elina Suomela-HärmäAvailable online: 17 March 2025More LessAbstractThe most important part of the production of the Danish Romanist Kristoffer Nyrop (1858–1931) focuses on French, but he has also laid the foundations for the teaching of Italian in Denmark. The grammar and the textbooks which he devised have been thoroughly studied by Viggo Bank Jensen. This article aims to analyse his contribution to the study of the Italian language, literature and civilization. Besides some studies on lexicology Nyrop was especially interested in the study of Italian folk tales. After losing his sight he concentrated on writing for the general public, as evidenced by the 74 contributions published in the newspaper Politiken, a dozen of which deal with “Italian“ topics.

Author(s): Margarita Ibáñez TarínAvailable online: 24 February 2025More LessAbstractThe secret meeting between Corpus Barga and Pablo Neruda in 1948, at the beginning of the Cold War, serves as a starting point to reflect on the relationship between two anti-fascist writers in a bipolar world. In the face of Neruda’s communist radicalization, Corpus Barga maintained positions of independent critical judgment. In this article we are interested in seeing the context in which Neruda’s artistic production was developed, made from a militant conscience, and the relationship that he developed with Corpus Barga, a cosmopolitan journalist with a long professional career developed between two centuries — born in 1887, he covered the First and Second World Wars — and between two continents, Europe and America.

Author(s): Natalia NielipowiczAvailable online: 14 January 2025More LessAbstractThis essay attempts to demonstrate Brittany as seen by Le Clézio. In presenting the land of the writer’s ancestors, it relies heavily on a text described by himself as an ‶autobiographical tale″ Chanson bretonne (2020). The essay also refers to a polyphonic novel, Revolutions (2003), which deepens the representation of the Breton country by a historical stratum. In line with geopoetic theories, the theme of the land does not stop in Le Clézio’s work at the level of description but attains the status of a more metaphorical representation. I propose to enrich the geopoetic approach with the methods of the geocritical and ecocritical approaches.

Author(s): Geir UvsløkkAvailable online: 26 November 2024More LessAbstractThis article explores memorial distances — i.e., forms of distances that are both personal, temporal, medial, cultural, linguistic, and hermeneutic — in Pas pleurer by Lydie Salvayre (2014) and L’Art de perdre by Alice Zeniter (2017). The two novels are retellings of violent and traumatic historical events — the Spanish war and the Algerian war respectively — by persons who did not themselves witness these events. As such, they are emblematic examples of indirect mediation of conflict memory. The article emphasizes the importance of studying the complexity and the multiplicity of memorial distances in such narratives and argues that such an approach allows a broader and deeper understanding of the multi-layered memory work that takes place in Pas pleurer and L’Art de perdre.

Geographic variation of voseo and tuteo on X (Twitter) with a consideration of mixing cases (vos puedes)
Author(s): Olga KellertAvailable online: 29 August 2024More LessAbstractThis article explores a new data source and a new method to analyze the spatial distribution of a well-known case of linguistic variation in Spanish, namely the use of personal pronouns in informal address also known as voseo and tuteo. The data source is the social media X, previously Twitter, and more precisely the geolocated textmessages, that is, messages associated with a precise location information. Previous analyses of the spatial distribution of voseo and tuteo in the literature focus more on the distribution of standard agreement forms of voseo/tuteo on the country scale and less on the city scale and they are mostly based on qualitative or on quantitative research with a small dataset. The present study focusses on the distribution of voseo and tuteo on a city scale on a bigger dataset than the dataset used in previous studies and it also takes mixed agreement cases into account such as tú podés instead of standard agreement tú puedes. The spatial distribution of voseo and tuteo on a city scale in the present use of voseo and tuteo in Argentina shows traces of historical origin of voseo and tuteo distribution in this country and some mixing cases more often occur in big cities, which might indicate that these mixing cases are socially higher marked.

Author(s): Giulia LombardiAvailable online: 12 January 2024More LessAbstractDuring the collection and anonymisation of the party proceedings that are part of the PRIN project “Atti Chiari” database, an exploratory and qualitative analysis of the texts revealed a widespread and transversal use of the quotation marks (“ ”), in association – or as an alternative – to the use of italics. It has been possible to verify that, in addition to the typical uses of the standard language, the introduction of inverted commas and italics in the party proceedings responds to the lawyers’ need to include in the text basic vocabulary that in the standard language would not need any modalisation strategy. This seems to show the authors’ reserve in introducing very common words in the texts as if they were not entirely appropriate; however, if italics and inverted commas are used to justify a communicative choice that has clearly not yet become standard, they are also evidence of a significant opening towards the drafting of clearer documents.
