Three yěs in Mandarin
Author(s): Zhaole Yangpp.: 1–37 (37)More LessAbstractThis paper argues that different from the focus use of the additive particle yě ‘also’, the yěs in its scalar use and modal use should be analyzed as distinct linguistic elements, indicating the existence of three different yěs in Mandarin. We aim to demonstrate that the semantic differences among the three uses arise from the unique presupposition inherent in each, dictating distinct relationships between the prejacent and the activated alternative(s). Expanding upon this premise, we further demonstrate that the three yěs are positioned differently within the syntactic structure. Specifically, Additive yě functions as an IP adverb; Scalar yě, serving as the functional head of the Scal(arity)P, occupies a position higher in the CP; Modal yě is situated even higher than the projection of evidential adverbs. Additionally, we also discuss the restricted interchangeability and cooccurrence between Scalar yě and dōu. Drawing on these observations, our research presents a comprehensive exploration of the multifaceted nature of the Mandarin particle yě.

Labeling through percolation
Author(s): Liching Livy Chiupp.: 38–65 (28)More LessAbstractIn the field of generative syntax, the literature proposes conceptual notions of labeling or labeling algorithms to interpret the categorization / or parts of speech of a given syntactic object. Building on this mechanism, we put forth the argument that a revised feature percolation principle (FPP) is a necessary supplement to effectively categorize linguistic items, and it should be applied at each merge operation. The study demonstrates that s-selection and categorial features (binary specifications of [V] and [N]) serve the crucial role of labeling from lexical representations to phrasal representations. This process illustrates the categorization process for merge (X, Y) → {H {X, Y}}. To test the minimalist treatment of this principle, we conduct an examination of data from both English and Mandarin Chinese languages. I compare several approaches by which labeling can be done in syntax. These approaches include: (a) through merge (Chomsky 1995), (b) through movement / or minimal search (Chomsky 2013, Epstein et al. 2014, and Rizzi 2012), and (c) through probing (Cecchetto & Donati 2010). Through empirical evidence, this study demonstrates that a feature percolation analysis effectively addresses the issues arising from a minimal search in both merge (XP, YP) and the merge (X, Y) problem. Furthermore, we derive constructions like VP ellipsis and VP fronting. Theoretically, this approach is well-motivated by the principle of compositionality found in linguistic items, and it offers a more economical labeling method. In empirical testing, we apply this configuration and mechanism to examine additional structures.

Split Reduplicant Hypothesis
Author(s): Adæmrys Chihjen Chengpp.: 66–93 (28)More LessAbstractIn this paper, I propose Split Reduplicant Hypothesis against previous research, claiming of one reduplicant being able to yield the diverse interpretation of adjectival reduplications, specifically the tetrasyllabic reduplicated adjectives. Following cartographic syntax, it is not satisfying and problematic for one reduplicant to host the diverse features and denote the distinct interpretations. Therefore, three reduplicants are proposed: redh, redm as well as redl, for example, redh refers to [aug], an emphatic interpretation; redm refers to [dim], a weakening reading; and redl refers to [neu], a positive interpretation, respectively. In other words, I propose the hierarchical structure of split reduplicants based on the interactions with the Taiwanese reduplicated adjectives. In addition to morphosyntactic reduplication, pragmatic-driven reduplication is also found. From the cross-linguistic point of view, Split Reduplicant Hypothesis is also applicable across languages. Intriguingly, tone sandhi also can play a role in determining the interpretations of adjectival reduplications, which indicates tone sandhi can correspond to the distinct reduplicants.

The phonology (prosody)-syntax interface in children with developmental language disorder
Author(s): Chuqiao Chen and Yang Yangpp.: 94–116 (23)More LessAbstractChildren with developmental language disorder (DLD) often experience language impairments in various linguistic domains, particularly in syntax and often in phonology. These two domains, phonology (including prosody) and syntax, are believed to interact with each other in children with typical language development, facilitating language acquisition. However, it remains unclear whether and how these interactions take place within the DLD group, and whether they provide any facilitative effects. Additionally, cognitive factors such as working memory also play a role in these impairments, further complicating the overall picture. To clarify these, we conduct a review study on relevant literature, aiming to make clear the theoretical frameworks and interactive factors at the phonology (prosody)-syntax interface in the context of DLD. Our review suggests that at least a subgroup of children with DLD encounters challenges in prosodic and phonological processing, as well as the phonology (prosody)-syntax interface. Furthermore, cognitive deficits related to working memory and the perception of acoustic cues, which contribute to phonological impairments, may subsequently affect syntactic development.

增价型使役态的形态句法研究 [The morphosyntax of valency-increasing causatives]
