The Relationship between Source Text Memory and Interpreting Performance
Author(s): Yu-Hsien Chiupp.: 1–19 (19)More LessCette étude cherche à enquêter la mémoire textuelle et la mémoire de fond du texte source après une courte interprétation consécutive, et à examiner la relation entre ces deux formes de mémoires et la qualité de l’interprétation. Un groupe d’interprètes en première année de maîtrise est recruté pour interpréter un discours anglais vers le mandarin phrase par phrase sans prendre de notes. Ils sont interrompus de temps en temps par un signe pour mémoriser, et sont demandés à écrire la phrase anglaise qu’ils viennent d’interpréter textuellement. Après avoir interprété 30 phrases, nous procédons aux tâches de reconnaissance des mots et des phrases. L’aptitude des interprètes pour reconnaître les formes superficielles et le contenu du texte source est examinée, par le biais des mots originaux, des synonymes, des mots de similitudes phonologiques et distraits, des phrases originales, des phrases, des phrases de changements sémantiques et distraites. Nous constatons que la mémoire de phrase textuelle est bien plus précise en interprétation. Pour le test de reconnaissance, peu de sous-catégories sont liées à la performance d’interprétation. Le résultat montre que la mémoire textuelle dégénère après un long intervalle et les interprètes ont tendance à s’appuyer plus sur la mémoire de fond pour l’identification.

La cotraduction, un mal parfois nécessaire
Author(s): Jeong-yeon Kimpp.: 21–44 (24)More LessCotranslation, which brings together one or more translators whose mother tongue is the source language and a reviser whose target language is the mother tongue, is rarely used in a largely circulated language. This process, on the other hand, is frequently used in countries where translation goes from a language with limited use to a more largely spoken one, and this is due to a lack of translators capable of carrying out this task from B to A. Though this cooperation seems a priori complicated, it undeniably offers advantages as it brings together the translator’s better understanding of the source text and the reviser’s easier detachment from the source text, the combination of which, in most cases, produces a rich and precise output. However, this process also has some inherent limitations: though the translator may understand all aspects of the source text, the translation he/she produces leaves something to be desired because of his/her incomplete command of the target language which is for him/her a “foreign language”. Also, an excessive detachment by the reviewer can cause dissimilarities and discrepancies between the original text and the rewritten one.

English as a Lingua Franca in Interpreter-Mediated Criminal Proceedings in Japan
Author(s): Jakub Eryk Marszalenkopp.: 45–68 (24)More LessMême si l’anglais est une langue dominante de l’interprétation juridique au Japon, de nombreux sujets de la procédure pénale au Japon qui recourent aux services d’interprétation en anglais ne le parlent pas comme leur langue maternelle. Les raisons principales de cette situation sont, entre autres, le manque ou l’indisponibilité des interprètes juridiques travaillant dans la première langue du sujet, des idéologies linguistiques de la part des autorités japonaises, ou le manque de prise de conscience du fait que le choix de la langue d’interprétation puisse avoir un impact sur le processus juridique. Afin d’évaluer le degré de difficultés potentielles dans la communication entre les locuteurs non natifs de l’anglais et les interprètes, j’ai demandé à douze interprètes juridiques de traduire l’extrait d’un jugement rendu dans une cour d’assises (saiban-in saiban). Cet article représente les premiers résultats de cette étude qui démontrent que la compréhension de ces textes peut induire celle du discours juridique qui a lieu pendant les audiences.

After presenting the rationale behind the creation of this course (mostly pertaining to marked difficulties of pronunciation) the instructor, a native speaker of French and a former conference interpreter, describes the course content and how it was carried out and concludes on the value of such a course in an academic program of conference interpretation.

Déverbalisation et traduction écrite

This article aims at shedding new light on the process at work in written texts, starting from a different angle, i.e. translated texts in which it might a posteriori be inferred. Assumptions which need be born in mind are recollected, setting a framework or background accounting at least partly for deverbalisation. Examples are given which make it possible for new questions to arise or new points of view to be taken into account. Links with other notions of the interpretive theory such as meaning, successful translation, transcoding and methodological issues are also reviewed.

Paramètres quantitatifs en interprétation simultanée avec et sans texte
Author(s): Réna Pyoun Hyewonpp.: 129–150 (22)More LessThis paper observes the interpreter’s strategies and his/her information processing when auditive and visual input are both provided, comparing simultaneous interpreting with text(SIT) and without text. SIT refers to the mode of simultaneous interpreting in which texts to be read by the speaker are given to the interpreter in advance. Although now common in international conferences, SIT has received little attention in research. An experimental study was carried out with practicing experienced international conference interpreters with the language combinations of French and Korean. Six subjects were asked to carry out two tasks: simultaneous interpreting without text, SIT with Korean text. For the results of the subjects’ performance, ear-voice span (EVS) and tail-to-tail span (TTS), the time lag in simultaneous interpreting, were examined in relation to omissions in information, which can reveal overload in information processing by the subjects. The significance of this study is that it lays the foundation for SIT research, and in particular time-related study of simultaneous interpreting with the language combinations of Korean and French.

Traductologie et traduction du discours scientifique – pour un repositionnement.

In contrast, the role of translation, independently of the extent to which it is acknowledged, underpins much of the work which belongs to the history of ideas.
Drawing on the specific instance of transmission of mathematical knowledge through translation, the paper will argue that translation studies can draw on scientific discourse to help identify issues of interest to translation research.
